1 | Eugène Boudin (1824 to 1898)

Summer 1857, Le Havre. A 33 year old painter walks past a framer’s window and notices the caricatures of a local kid hanging in the display. He goes in, asks to meet the kid, and tells him the most useful thing anyone has ever told him: stop the caricatures, come paint outside with me at Honfleur.

The kid is 17 and his name is Oscar Claude Monet.

The painter is Eugène Boudin. He did not wait for Monet to have a body of work. Son of a harbour pilot in Honfleur, he has been painting outside on Normandy beaches for ten years with an easel planted in the sand, which nobody else does at the time.

He invents a new motif: Trouville, Deauville, bourgeois families in crinolines taking the sea air on the Channel coast while immense clouds occupy two thirds of the canvas.

Corot nicknames him the king of skies. Baudelaire devotes a long eulogy to his pastels in his Salon of 1859, long before Monet exists as a painter.

He keeps painting his skies and beaches until his death in 1898. Today, in the Musée d’Orsay, most visitors walk past the small Boudin canvases in a hurry to reach the Monets.

2 | Guido Borelli (born 1952)

You have already seen one of his paintings without knowing his name. An Italian village at golden hour, a Tuscan alley with laundry hanging between the walls, a warm dusk. On a friend’s living room wall, in a hotel room in San Francisco, on a poster sold at an airport gift shop.

His name is Guido Borelli. Born in Caluso, at the foot of the Piedmont Alps, into a family of musicians and painters who pushed him to draw from childhood. National drawing competition won at thirteen. First solo exhibition at seventeen, in Turin, in 1969. Classical training at the Accademia Albertina.

The market falls in love. Borelli ends up exhibiting in around twenty countries, from Italy to Japan, from Kenya to California. His Italian villages become a tourism export more efficient than any travel agency.

Italian critics call him commercial. Italian collectors keep buying anyway. So does the rest of the world.

3 | John Powell (born 1930)

He is 95 years old, lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, and paints flowers every morning. Bouquets in copper jugs, garden tables with wine and bread, sun pouring through the petals of an open peony.

John Powell was born in Hollywood in 1930. Self taught. He started painting at sixteen and has never stopped. He learned by looking at Boldini, Sorolla, the Spanish still life masters who could make a piece of pottery feel heavier than a person.

He traveled a lot. Mexico, Italy, Greece, North Africa, Japan. He came home loaded with fabrics, ceramics, embroidered shawls that reappear in his still lifes like permanent set pieces.

In 1995, for the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, the World Federation of United Nations Associations named him Artist of the Year. A set of his paintings entered the permanent collection of the Philatelic Museum at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The critics ignore him. The buyers who push open the door of a Carmel gallery and stop in front of one of his canvases do not.

At the center of the painting, a young woman lifts a glass to her lips.

Her gaze meets no one else’s.

It’s on her face that, in the film Amélie, an old confined painter struggles year after year, obsessively copying the same painting without ever managing to figure out what she’s thinking.

The painting is called Luncheon of the Boating Party.

It’s the crown jewel of the Phillips Collection in Washington.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted it between the summer of 1880 and March 1881, on the terrace of an inn at Chatou, fifteen kilometers west of Paris.

Renoir is 39 years old. He’s broke. He’s just walked out of the Impressionist group after ten years of battles.

In January 1880, six months before starting the painting, he fell off his bicycle and broke his right arm. He painted for a few weeks with his left hand, and he wrote to a friend: “I think I did well to break my arm.”

At this table, they are fourteen.

Several of them will become, in the next thirty years, names around whom part of European 20th-century culture will be built.

We’ll look at them one by one.

The Inn

A small island in the middle of the Seine, facing the village of Chatou.

At its far end, a white two-story building: the Maison Fournaise.

In 1857, a former marine carpenter named Alphonse Fournaise senior bought the building and turned it into a restaurant doubled with a boat rental service. The success was rapid.

Twenty years later, it had become the favorite spot of Parisians wanting to escape the city on a Sunday.

It all came from a train. Since 1837, France’s very first passenger railway line had connected Paris to Saint-Germain-en-Laye, passing through Chatou.

Twenty-five minutes’ journey. One franc sixty for a one-way ticket. A clerk, a civil servant, a small shopkeeper could leave Paris at ten in the morning and have lunch here at noon.

In the dining room, at this table, in the 1880s: Parisian bourgeois, artists, actresses, civil servants, journalists, single women, barons, seamstresses.

A social mix the city allowed nowhere else.

Maupassant, a regular at the place for years, called it “le phalanstère des canotiers”, a sort of small republic of boating enthusiasts.

This is where Renoir set up his easel in the summer of 1880.

Aline and the Little Dog

In the foreground, at the bottom left, a young woman playfully looks into the eyes of a small black dog she is holding in front of her.

She looks at nothing else.

She is 21 years old. Her name is Aline Charigot. She’s a seamstress. She comes from Essoyes, a winegrowing village in the Aube, on the edge of Champagne.

For a few months now, she’s been having lunch every day at a creamery on rue Saint-Georges, in the 9th district of Paris. She pays a few sous for her daily plate.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, eighteen years older than her, broke, single, sleeps on the fifth floor right across the street. He comes to lunch there every day at the same time she does.

One noon, he arranged to sit at the table next to hers.

By the end of 1879, she had fallen in love with him.

In the summer of 1880, he takes her to pose at Chatou. He places her in the bottom left, in the softest light of the table.

The dog isn’t hers. Renoir placed it there later, during the execution, because at that spot there had first been someone else.

The Big Red-Bearded Fellow

Behind Aline, standing, leaning on the wrought-iron railing, a tall guy in a white cotton singlet.

Bare arms, thick moustache, red beard, flat-topped straw hat tilted back on his head.

This is Alphonse Fournaise junior. 34 years old. The restaurateur’s son. He grew up on this island, in this inn.

He’s the one in charge of renting out the boats. He has about thirty of them. Thin rowing boats, flat-bottomed barges, even a Canadian canoe brought back from a World’s Fair.

That white singlet he’s wearing is the visual marker of a boater. Bare arms in the presence of ladies, in 1880, is a measured transgression.

At Chatou, you allow yourself what the city forbids.

Exactly one month from now, this face will be found in a book.

The Baron and the Young Widow

Shift your gaze to the center of the painting. Two figures are in deep conversation.

A man seated with his back to us, a brown bowler hat, a wide neck. A woman leaning on the railing, white dress with red trim, yellow straw hat, half-smile.

The man is Baron Raoul Barbier. 40 years old. Former cavalry officer. Mayor of Saigon between 1871 and 1872, at the time when France was setting up its colonial administration in Indochina (today’s Vietnam). Légion d’honneur. Bon vivant.

The woman he’s talking to is Alphonsine Fournaise. 35 years old. The restaurateur’s daughter. A young widow.

She’s the one who welcomes the guests at the inn, who handles the reservations, who knows which boat to rent at what time. Renoir had already painted her on five other canvases.

In the autumn of 1880, while Renoir is working on this painting, another young painter is setting up at Chatou to decorate the ground floor of the inn with frescoes. His name is Maurice Réalier-Dumas. He is 20 years old.

And Alphonsine is in the process of falling in love with him.

Barbier, meanwhile, talks. She listens. But her mind is on the floor below.

The Drinking Woman at the Center

Come back to the center. To the young woman lifting a glass to her lips, the one who opens this article.

Her name is Ellen Andrée. 23 years old. Actress, model, former dancer at the Folies Bergère.

At 18, Édouard Manet paints her in La Parisienne. At 22, in La Prune. At 23, in Chez le père Lathuile.

When she poses for Renoir, she’s on the rise at the Comédie-Française and the Variétés. She has posed for half the Impressionist painters in less than ten years.

She stares into space. The glass serves her as a screen.

More than a century later, a filmmaker will spend years trying to figure her out.

Remember her glass.

The Journalist and the Florist

Still at the center, two figures are openly flirting.

A standing man leans toward a seated young woman who’s drinking gracefully from her glass.

The man is Adrien Maggiolo. 37 years old. A monarchist journalist, editor at L’Union then director of La France nouvelle. Six years earlier, in 1875, he had fought a sword duel for seven rounds against a fellow journalist after accusing him of cheating at cards. The duel ended with a shared glass of Malaga wine between the two men.

The young woman he’s talking to is Angèle Legault. A florist from Montmartre, model for the painters of the hill.

Renoir said he appreciated her for her Parisian street slang.

She listens while drinking. She might well be the only person in the painting who’s actually listening to someone else.

The Boater Sitting Backwards

Front right. A man has sat down backwards on his chair. Arms folded over the backrest, chin almost resting on it.

He wears a white singlet identical to Fournaise’s and a straw boater hat.

This is Gustave Caillebotte. 32 years old. Painter. Amateur naval architect. Well-known regatta sailor on the lower Seine.

He comes from a family of wealthy magistrates. His father is dead, his brother is dead, his mother died in 1878. At 30, he inherited a massive fortune. He lives alone, without children.

He has just bought, in 1881, a house at Petit-Gennevilliers, on the other side of the Seine facing Chatou.

At 28, he had already drawn up his will. One of its clauses, thirteen years from now, will trigger one of the most violent cultural battles of the Third Republic.

The Banker in the Top Hat

In the background to the right, among the bare heads and straw hats, one silhouette stands out.

Black suit, strict frock coat, rigid top hat firmly on his head. White shirt, collar buttoned.

Not a single concession to the heat, not a single concession to Chatou.

This is Charles Ephrussi. 31 years old. A Jewish banker from Odessa, settled in Paris for ten years in a private townhouse on rue de Monceau.

He doesn’t really do banking. His family made its fortune in the wheat trade on the Black Sea, and his grandfather was nicknamed “the wheat king”.

Charles, for his part, writes. He publishes art history essays in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. He’s currently preparing a major monograph on Albrecht Dürer.

What he does for Renoir and his friends isn’t visible in the painting.

Right next to him, almost in his shadow, a young man in a brown jacket and soft cap. 20 years old. Not Parisian.

His name is Jules Laforgue, born in Montevideo, Uruguay. Destitute, he sleeps in maids’ rooms and reads all day at the Bibliothèque nationale. Ephrussi hired him in 1881 for 150 francs a month.

He’s the one who actually writes the Dürer monograph his boss is about to publish next year.

In a few months, he’ll be the official guest of an empress.

Remember his cap.

The Trio on the Right

At the far right of the painting, a trio crammed into the corner. A young woman standing, two men cornering her. One by the shoulder, the other almost at her neck.

The young woman is laughing while raising her hands to cover her ears.

Her name is Jeanne Samary. 23 years old. A permanent member of the Comédie-Française since 5 December 1878. Specialist in comedy roles. Her father is a cellist at the Opéra. Renoir had already painted her a dozen times.

She had also been his mistress, briefly, in 1877.

The one holding her by the waist on her right wears a pince-nez and a boater hat. This is Paul Lhote. 30 years old. Sailor, weekend painter, journalist, traveler. He’s one of Renoir’s closest friends.

The other one, behind her in a dark felt hat, is Eugène-Pierre Lestringuez. A senior civil servant at the Ministry of the Interior. Impeccable dark gray suit.

Beneath the suit, a passion: the occult. He reads Éliphas Lévi, frequents spiritualist circles, believes in animal magnetism and palmistry.

He’s telling Jeanne a story. Something you don’t tell a lady in the city.

The Gazes

Step back and look at the whole.

Caillebotte stares at Aline. Aline looks at the dog. Barbier talks to Alphonsine, but Alphonsine is thinking of the young painter working on the floor below.

Ellen Andrée stares into space. Jeanne Samary looks away from the civil servant with the passion for the occult who is whispering in her ear. Ephrussi speaks to his secretary, but their bodies are turned in two different directions.

Not a single guest in the painting meets the gaze of another.

Fourteen people around the same table for an entire Sunday, and no one really meets anyone.

There’s a technical reason for this. Renoir never brought these fourteen people together at the same time on the terrace.

He painted the still life and the decor first, then had his friends come one by one, or in small groups, over sixteen months.

None of them could meet the gaze of another who wasn’t there.

Then you start counting.

Thirteen, or Fourteen?

Aline, Alphonse junior, Caillebotte, Barbier, Alphonsine, Ellen Andrée, Maggiolo, Angèle, Ephrussi, his secretary in the cap, Samary, Lhote, Lestringuez.

Thirteen.

And then this partial face behind Ellen Andrée, this half-profile beneath a backwards-tilted cap, who speaks to no one and to whom no one is listening.

The fourteenth.

Thirteen would have been a problem for Renoir. Thirteen guests around a table in a large 19th-century painting, any French viewer of the time would have recognized as The Last Supper.

Christ’s last meal with his twelve apostles, painted a thousand times since Leonardo da Vinci. The moment when Jesus announces that one of the twelve is going to betray him, six hours before his arrest.

Renoir is painting the exact opposite. He’s painting a Sunday of friendship, warmth, light wine.

He couldn’t afford thirteen.

So who is this fourteenth face he added at the very last moment?

That’s the first secret of the painting. Others follow. And several of these unknown people, from this terrace at Chatou, will weigh on the century that is about to open…

1 | Saint Sebastian : The Arrow Magnet

Who is he?

• A Roman officer who secretly helped persecuted Christians.
  Once exposed, he was sentenced to death by archers.

• Left for dead, riddled with arrows, he survived.
  A widow named Irene nursed him back to health.

• Instead of hiding, he returned to confront the emperor.
  This time he was beaten to death.

• He became the patron saint against the plague.
  In ancient myth, Apollo sent disease through arrows : Sebastian, who survived them, became the one who stops them.

Secret Codes to Recognize Him

• 🏹 The arrows
  His absolute signature.
  Arrows pierce his torso, legs, or neck : no other saint is shown this way.
  See a body full of arrows in a church? It is Sebastian. Always.

• 💪 The nearly nude body
  Apart from Christ on the cross, he is the only male figure in Christian art regularly shown almost naked.
  Young, beardless, muscular, wearing just a loincloth.
  While every other saint has a signature color, Sebastian’s signature is his skin.
  A Christianized Greek Apollo.

• 🪢 The tree or column
  He is always tied to something : a tree trunk, a column, or a post.
  The binding forces his body into elegant twisted poses that painters used to show off their skill.
  Arms behind the back or above the head, the body turning like a Greek statue.

  His body is full of arrows but his face is peaceful, sometimes almost ecstatic.
  Painters did not want to show suffering : they wanted to show beauty.
  Sebastian was less a martyr and more a figure study.

  This is the same pose used for ancient Greek statues of Apollo.

The detail to spot :

Sebastian is the “supermodel” of the Church. No other male figure was painted nude this often, his face calm, his body elegant, his pose borrowed from Greek gods.

For painters, he was the perfect alibi to prove their skill at anatomy while following the rules of a religious commission.

His image has been borrowed ever since : fashion photography, contemporary art, album covers. A body pierced by arrows, 1,700 years and still iconic.

Periods and movements :

• The Middle Ages sometimes painted him clothed and bearded.
  A soldier martyr, not a model.

• The Renaissance seized him with obsession.
  Young, nude, bound, lit from one side : everything a painter needed to show mastery of the human body.

• His image exploded during the great plagues.
  Plague chapels across Europe are covered with him : a vaccine painted on a wall.

2 | Saint Jerome : The Wild Scholar

Who is he?

• The great intellectual of the early Church (4th century).
  He translated the entire Bible into Latin, a version called the Vulgate, used for over a thousand years.

• A man of extremes : after years of scholarly life in Rome, he left for the Syrian desert to live as a hermit.
  Sleeping on the ground, eating nothing, punishing his own body.

• Painters loved him because he gave them two completely opposite scenes :
  the scholar surrounded by books, and the hermit alone in a cave with a skull.

Ghent, March 2026.

On the walls of the city, in the windows of cafes, at the entrance of libraries and theaters, three slogans have appeared.

The Old Masters were women too.

Muse or Master?

She painted, he signed.

The posters lead to the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent. On the facade, the announcement of the exhibition Unforgettable. Women Artists from Antwerp to Amsterdam, 1600 to 1750.

More than forty artists from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, brought together for the first time.

From Rachel Ruysch to Johanna Koerten, from Maria Faydherbe to Anna Maria van Schurman, stars of their time whose names have slipped into oblivion. In their day, they painted, sculpted, engraved, sold their work to the courts of Europe, trained pupils, ran workshops. They were read, exhibited, cited in the biographies of their era.

And then, after their death, their names slipped away.

For four of them, the erasure lasted three hundred years. Each through a different path.

Clara Peeters. Judith Leyster. Michaelina Wautier. Maria Sibylla Merian.

This is their story.

1. Clara Peeters, Antwerp, 1612

Antwerp, 1612. Clara Peeters, 25 years old, signs a still life.

Not in the lower corner of the panel, as the painters of the city do. Not on a marble plaque painted in trompe l’oeil, as some do. On the handle of the knife she has just painted.

The knife is not a table detail. It is a bridal knife, the conjugal object given to newlyweds in the Low Countries (modern day Belgium and the Netherlands), on whose handle one engraved both names and moral virtues. On Peeters’ knife, in place of the husband’s name, it is her own.

CLARA PEETERS. In capitals.

The gesture is deliberate.

In 1612 in Antwerp, women painters exist. They can even be members of the Guild of Saint Luke, the all powerful painters’ corporation of the city. But they are rare. Most paint in the workshop of a father, a brother, or a husband, and sign under that workshop’s name. A man’s name.

Peeters is one of the exceptions. No painter father, no family workshop. She runs her own studio. She specializes entirely in still life, a genre that barely exists before her.

Before 1608, the year she paints her first dated work, fewer than five food still life paintings are known to have been produced in all the Low Countries. Five, in total.

Peeters will largely help invent the genre.

The falconry still life, that is her, in 1611, the year Archdukes Albert and Isabella reinstate hunting at court. She also establishes the first codes of the breakfast still life, what Dutch painters will soon call the ontbijtje, which will become a generation later one of the great subgenres of Golden Age painting. She is also one of the first to paint fish.

But she does not place her name on the surface of her canvases. She slips it inside the painting itself.

She places a discreet CLARA P on the edge of a painted table. And in at least eight of her known paintings, she slips her own face into the reflective surfaces of the objects she herself has painted. Silver gilt goblets. Bulging pewter pitchers.

In a still life painted in 1611, her face appears six times in the same painting, on two different objects. In the reflection of the goblet, she stands before her easel, brush in hand, painting. In the reflection of the pitcher, she wears a tall lace bonnet and a white ruff, the large pleated collar typical of women of the Antwerp upper class.

She does not sign the canvas. She paints herself into it.

For centuries, her paintings circulate under her name. But the system is not understood. The signatures engraved into the objects and the tiny self portraits in the pitchers are not read for what they are: a continuous, methodical assertion of who painted the canvas.

It takes the late twentieth century for art historians to start looking at her paintings as closely as she painted them.

Peeters paints for over thirty years. After 1639, nothing. No will, no last dated painting. She is 52, and she vanishes from the archives.

The exhibition Unforgettable brings together six of her paintings. The still life with cheeses and shrimp is among them. If you step close to the panel, both gestures appear side by side: the name engraved on the handle of the bridal knife, and the tiny face of the painter in the reflection of the jug’s lid.

2. Judith Leyster, Haarlem, 1635

Haarlem, 1635. Before the officers of the Guild of Saint Luke, Judith Leyster, 26 years old, files a complaint against Frans Hals.

Hals is 53. He is the most famous master painter in the city. He has just accepted into his workshop a young apprentice, Willem Wouters, who had begun his training with Leyster a few days earlier. Wouters left Leyster without the guild’s permission. Hals recruited him.

Leyster attacks, before the most powerful institution in the city, the most respected master in the trade.

The ruling comes a few weeks later. Wouters’ mother pays four guilders to Leyster, half the sum she had claimed. Hals pays a fine of three guilders. Wouters is no longer allowed to paint in Hals’ workshop. Leyster, too, is sanctioned for failing to register the apprentice in time with the guild.

A partial victory. But in 1635, the act of a woman who does not bend before Frans Hals.

Leyster was born in Haarlem in 1609. Her father runs a small brewery he named De Leyster: the pole star in Dutch, the guiding star. A few years after her birth, he goes bankrupt. The father loses the sign. The daughter keeps the name.

She learns to paint with a master of the city, possibly Hals himself.

At 17, the chronicler of Haarlem, Samuel Ampzing, notices her. In the margin of his Description of Haarlem, about a painter’s workshop, he writes that there is someone else there who paints with beauty and boldness. The name in the margin is Leyster.

At 24, in 1633, she enters the guild. She opens her workshop. She takes three male apprentices in two years.

She never signs her full name. Just a monogram: a J and an L intertwined, and a five pointed star on the right, a play on her family name.

She marries the painter Jan Miense Molenaer in 1636. She dies in 1660, at 50, in Heemstede, near Haarlem.

After her death, her name disappears from the major histories of art. Houbraken, who publishes in 1718 the great collection of biographies of Dutch painters, gives her no entry.

For 233 years, her paintings are sold, bought, exhibited under other names. Most often as Frans Hals. Sometimes as Pieter de Hooch, Gerard van Honthorst, Jan Miense Molenaer, Jan de Bray.

Someone, at some point, paints the signature of Hals over the star monogram on one of Leyster’s canvases, The Happy Couple, dated 1630.

May 1893. London. New Bond Street.

The Dutch art historian Cornelis Hofstede de Groot walks into the gallery of Thomas Lawrie, which opened a few months earlier. On the wall, The Happy Couple. Lawrie bought it from another London dealer, Charles Wertheimer, as a Frans Hals. Wertheimer, when selling him the painting, had told him it was the finest Hals he had ever seen.

Hofstede de Groot steps closer. Under the Hals signature, he makes out a smaller monogram. A J. An L. A star.

May 1893. London civil court. Lawrie sues Wertheimer for misrepresentation: the painting is authentic, but the Hals signature painted over it is the forgery. The two dealers settle out of court.

The name Judith Leyster is never spoken during the trial.

The woman who had taken Hals before the Haarlem guild in 1635 sees, two hundred and fifty eight years later, her signature covered by that of the same Hals on one of her own paintings.

The 1630 self portrait has become the image used as the banner for most publications and exhibitions on women painters. It is in Unforgettable, along with four other Leysters.

The Happy Couple stayed in Paris, at the Louvre.

3. Michaelina Wautier, Brussels, c. 1655

Brussels, around 1655. Michaelina Wautier, fifty years old, paints a life size male nude.

The canvas is two meters seventy high and three meters fifty wide. Bacchus, drunk, round bellied, is carried by his satyrs. Several full length male nudes surround him, precise anatomy, nothing concealed.

It is, to the knowledge of art historians today, the first time a woman painter depicts a life size male nude in a mythological scene of this scale.

And she paints herself into the canvas.

At center right, standing among the revelers, a clothed woman in her fifties looks the viewer straight in the eye. She is not part of the procession. She observes the scene. She observes us.

Wautier signs the painting with her name.

She was born in Mons, County of Hainaut, in 1604, baptized in September. She has an older brother, Charles, also a painter. In 1645, they settle together in Brussels, share a studio, and stay there for the rest of their lives. Neither of them marries.

She sells four paintings to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, governor of the Southern Low Countries, the greatest collector at the Brussels court. Her brother Charles sells him fewer.

She dies in Brussels in 1689, at 85. She leaves everything to Charles.

That is the last time her name is attached to her paintings for three centuries.

From the late seventeenth century on, her works enter private collections and resurface in inventories under the name of Charles Wautier. The signatures are still there, perfectly visible. They have been read as Charles, or ignored.

No one could believe that these canvases, these full length male nudes, this Triumph of Bacchus, were the work of a woman.

The self portrait Wautier paints around 1649 is for decades catalogued as a work by Artemisia Gentileschi. When that attribution collapses, it is reassigned to the Dutch scholar Anna Maria van Schurman.

The Triumph of Bacchus itself remains hanging in Vienna under the name of her brother Charles for generations. The official attribution to Michaelina Wautier dates from 1967.

It took three hundred years, give or take, to rewrite the label.

The first solo retrospective dedicated to Michaelina Wautier alone opened in 2018 at the MAS, the Museum aan de Stroom in Antwerp. It brought together for the first time nearly all the known paintings by the artist.

The Triumph of Bacchus has not left Vienna. But Unforgettable shows two other Wautiers, including A Boy with Tobacco, around 1650, the study of a child sneezing, considered one of the chiaroscuro masterpieces of its era.

4. Maria Sibylla Merian, Port of Amsterdam, July 10, 1699

Port of Amsterdam, July 10, 1699. Maria Sibylla Merian, 52 years old, boards a ship bound for Surinam.

With her, her younger daughter Dorothea, 19, and the drawing materials needed for two years of work on site. The crossing to Paramaribo, capital of the Dutch colony of Surinam, takes about two months.

No institution commissions her. No prince pays her passage. To leave, she has sold part of her own collections. Before boarding, she has written her will. She is divorced. She leaves behind in Amsterdam her other daughter, Johanna Helena, and a small studio.

What she wants to do in Surinam, no one has done before her.

Go there, see the insects alive, watch them lay eggs, feed, molt, become adults, on their own plants, in a tropical climate, and draw everything from life.

Merian was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1647. Her father is Matthaus Merian the Elder, one of the greatest engravers and publishers in Europe, founder of a printing dynasty. He dies when she is three. Her mother remarries Jacob Marrel, a still life painter, who becomes her first teacher.

At thirteen, Merian raises caterpillars in sealed jars and draws their transformation day by day.

At 32, she publishes her first book on caterpillars, in German, in Nuremberg.

In Surinam, she stays two years. She treks through plantations, draws, observes. She catches malaria. In June 1701, she is forced to return.

In 1705, she publishes Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium. Sixty giant plates, each engraved and hand colored by Merian and her workshop. Each plate shows a plant, the insects that feed on it, and their complete life cycle.

The book founds modern entomology.

In her entry on the peacock flower, plate 45, Merian writes a sentence no scientific publication of her century would have printed. Translated from her seventeenth century Dutch:

The Indians, who are not well treated by their Dutch masters, use the seeds to abort their children, so that their children will not become slaves like them.

She names the plant. She names the act. She names the master slave relationship. She does not name the women who told her.

Merian dies in Amsterdam in 1717, at 70.

In the decades that follow, her name is misattributed within her own family. Some of her plates are reissued under the name of Matthaus Merian, her father, who died when she was three. Others are republished under the name of Jacob Marrel, her stepfather, who never set foot in Surinam.

The book of one woman becomes the legacy of two dead men.

Her name is not restored to the science of entomology until the twentieth century.

Unforgettable shows seven of her works. Including the plate that opens the Surinam book: a pineapple surrounded by cockroaches, engraved by Merian a year and a half after her return to Amsterdam.

Unforgettable

Forty women artists from the Low Countries (modern day Belgium and the Netherlands) across the long seventeenth century, brought together for the first time in the same museum.

Nearly one hundred and fifty works.

The exhibition spans three centuries, from the Antwerp still lifes of Clara Peeters to the tropical plates of Merian, through the flowers of Rachel Ruysch painted when she was still working at 78, the intricate paper cutouts of Johanna Koerten, the Hebrew calligraphy of Anna Maria van Schurman, the sculptures of Maria Faydherbe.

Six Peeters. Five Leysters. Two Wautiers. Seven Merians. And thirty five other women painters, sculptors, engravers, embroiderers, most of whom have never been shown in the same room.

Unforgettable. Women Artists from Antwerp to Amsterdam, 1600 to 1750 is open at the MSK in Ghent until May 31, 2026. Co organized with the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington.

The exhibition closes May 31. After that, these forty women go back to their separate museums across the world, and some go back to storage.

If you are anywhere near Ghent this month, this is the reason to go. Allow ninety minutes for the exhibition. And stay another hour in the permanent galleries of the MSK right after: it is one of the finest collections of Flemish and Dutch painting in Europe, with Bosch, Rubens, Memling, and many leave without seeing it.

Three hundred years of recovered signatures.

At the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the crowd in front of this painting never thins.

Tour groups follow each other all day long, guide in front, flag raised so no one gets lost. The room is never empty. This is probably the most reproduced bedroom in the entire history of painting.

Vincent van Gogh painted the canvas in three days, from October 16 to October 18, 1888, in Arles, in the first real home he could call his own at the age of 35.

He had repainted the front of the house yellow himself, and that is the name he gave it: the Yellow House. While he is painting the bedroom, he writes to his brother Theo: “looking at the picture should rest the mind, or rather, the imagination.”

He is trying to express “absolute rest.”

Everything is tidy, organized, peaceful. The house is ready. But for whom?

The bed

Massive, made of pale pinewood, it takes up the entire lower half of the painting, framed in thick black lines like a Japanese print, to express its solidity.

Vincent did not always have it. He had been renting this house since May 1, 1888, but lived there for four months without being able to sleep in it, with no money to buy furniture.

He kept renting a room for 5 francs a week at the Café de la Gare a few steps away, where he slept on a mattress. During the day, he would walk back to the Yellow House to paint. The room stayed empty, no bed, no table.

He finally moved in on September 17, on a mattress laid on the floor.

Twelve days later, he leaves the house, crosses Place Lamartine, and walks down the street to a carpenter’s workshop in Arles. He comes back with this bed.

150 francs. The monthly rent for the entire house is 15 francs. Ten months of rent for a single piece of furniture. For a man who has never sold a painting in his life, and who depends on the money sent to him every month by his younger brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris.

It is a double bed. Two pillows are placed on it, side by side.

That evening, the bed is set up against the right-hand wall. The next day, the room next door is also furnished: a second bed, in walnut, simpler, a chest of drawers, a chair. Vincent walks from one room to the other, checks the layout, moves a piece of furniture, adjusts the curtains.

The two chairs

Identical. Yellow wood, woven straw seats, peasant build with uneven legs. Plain country furniture, locally made.

Vincent valued this craftsman’s identity, and disliked the upholstered furniture of Parisian salons.

One chair stands near the head of the bed. The other against the back wall, next to a small washstand. The other ten are placed throughout the rest of the house.

One of these chairs will be painted by Vincent a few weeks later, in a canvas that will become one of the best-known of his entire body of work. This chair is going to matter.

The hat, the smock

On the right-hand wall, next to the head of the bed, nails driven into the plaster hold the only personal items in sight.

A wide-brimmed straw hat. A heavy painter’s smock, cut like a worker’s coat, painted in deep blue.

Vincent goes out every day to paint in the fields around Arles with this gear, the easel and the wet canvas under his arm. The hat also serves him at night: he sticks lit candles around the brim to paint outdoors in the dark.

That is how he painted, three weeks earlier, on the banks of the Rhône a few steps from his house, his first Starry Night, with Place Lamartine in the foreground and the Big Dipper above. The month before, in the same setup, the Café Terrace at Night.

The mistral, the wind from the Rhône, is so violent that he has to anchor his easel with metal stakes to keep it from flying away.

He comes back from the fields covered in paint, dust and pollen. The locals call him “the redheaded madman.” He doesn’t speak Provençal, and he writes to Theo: “whole days go by without my saying a word to anyone.”

The poet and the lover

On the same right-hand wall, two small canvases hang one above the other. Vincent painted them himself in the summer of 1888.

The portrait above shows Eugène Boch, a 33-year-old Belgian painter living in Fontvieille, a few kilometers from Arles. Vincent admired his thin face, which reminded him of Dante. He painted Boch against a starry night sky. He called him “The Poet.”

The portrait below shows Paul-Eugène Milliet, a Zouave second lieutenant stationed in Arles. A robust young man, to whom Vincent was giving drawing lessons. Red kepi on an emerald background.

Milliet was known for his many love affairs throughout the town. Vincent called him “The Lover.”

The poet and the lover. Vincent sleeps under the faces of his two friends from Arles. During the eight months he has just spent here, he has also painted his doctor, the postman, the grocer, and the café owner Madame Ginoux. He is methodically documenting the few human presences he has managed to gather.

At 35, this is the first house where he can have visitors.

In the room next door, four sunflowers hang on the walls, two pairs that face each other. Vincent painted them in a single week, at the end of summer.

The room that tilts

The floor seems to slide toward the viewer. The back wall meets the side walls at a strange angle. There are no cast shadows. The colors are flat, with no shading.

For a century, critics saw all of this as clinical proof of mental instability. They were wrong.

Vincent collected Japanese prints with passion. At his death, more than 600 prints by Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro will be found in his belongings.

These prints painted in flat colors, with no light-and-shadow effects, with strong outlines and a perspective that flattens space instead of digging into it. Vincent called them “the crepons,” after the crepe paper they were printed on.

While he is painting the canvas, he writes to Theo: “I wanted to make things simple, the way they are in the crepons.” The geometry that looks like madness is in fact a careful plan.

The closed window

At the back of the room, half hidden by the washstand, a double-leaf window painted in emerald green. The inner shutters are almost fully closed. No direct light gets through.

Yet the window looks out onto Place Lamartine and onto the city he has been painting in recent weeks.

But here, Vincent decides to shut it all out. He writes to Theo: “there is nothing in this bedroom with closed shutters.” And: “this is to take my revenge against the forced rest I had to endure.”

A few days earlier, he had been confined to bed by nervous exhaustion. He had slept sixteen hours straight.

On October 16, he gets up, takes out a canvas, sets his easel against the bed, and starts painting the room he is in. He finishes it on October 18.

Above the washstand, a small black-framed mirror. It is in front of this mirror that he has painted himself a dozen times since arriving in Arles.

Five days

In mid-October 1888, in the Yellow House, everything is moving fast.

In three weeks, Vincent has spent the equivalent of twenty months of rent on furniture. He has painted four sunflower canvases in a single week to decorate the room next door. He has had the house connected to the gas network so he can paint at night. He has repainted the front of the house yellow.

On October 18, he finishes this bedroom. Nothing is missing.

Five days later, at four in the morning, someone knocks on the front door…

1. Edward Hopper, age 9 - Little Boy Looking at the Sea

Nyack, New York. 1891.

A nine-year-old boy sits on a wooden chair facing the Hudson River.

He paints the back of another child looking at the water.

His name is Edward Hopper.

The family lives on North Broadway, three blocks from the river. His father runs a general store. His mother Elizabeth draws in her spare time and slips pencils, paper, and watercolor sets into little Edward’s hands as soon as he is old enough to hold a brush.

Nyack is a shipbuilding town. From the family kitchen, Edward watches schooners and steamers cross the Hudson every day.

He is tall for his age, awkward, quiet. He prefers watching to playing.

The painting is small. A figure in dark clothes, seen from behind, alone in front of an empty horizon. No face. No detail. Just the back of a child looking at the water.

He signs the bottom right corner: “E. Hopper, 1891.”

His family keeps the painting. It later passes to his sister Marion, and then to the Edward Hopper House Museum in Nyack. The house where he was born.

2. Artemisia Gentileschi, age 17 - Susanna and the Elders

Rome, summer 1610.

In the workshop on Via della Croce, a seventeen-year-old girl rests her brush against a canvas and signs the bottom left corner: ARTEMITIA GENTILESCHI F. 1610.

The canvas shows a naked young woman flinching as two old men lean over her bath. She twists away. She pushes them back with both hands.

The painter is Artemisia Gentileschi.

Her father Orazio is one of the most respected followers of Caravaggio in the city. The workshop is full of male apprentices. Artemisia is the only daughter, the only girl allowed near the paint.

At 14, she already paints in oil better than most of her father’s students.

Most male Baroque painters show Susanna seductive, half smiling, almost flattered. Artemisia paints her terrified. Twisted away. In the act of refusing.

The canvas has been at Schloss Weißenstein in Pommersfelden, Bavaria, since 1728.

3. Albrecht Dürer, age 13 - Self-Portrait in Silverpoint

Nuremberg, 1484.

A thirteen-year-old boy sits in front of a small mirror set on the wooden table of his father’s goldsmith workshop. He holds a metal stylus. He draws his own face on a sheet of prepared paper.

The technique is called silverpoint. It allows no corrections. One wrong stroke and the drawing is destroyed.

The boy is Albrecht Dürer.

His father, Albrecht the Elder, was born in Hungary, trained in Budapest, and later settled in Nuremberg, the printing capital of Europe.

The family has 18 children. Only three will live to adulthood.

Young Albrecht draws himself half turned, finger pointing somewhere out of frame, hair falling in long curls. The line moves without hesitation.

Decades later, the adult Dürer returns to the drawing and adds an inscription in the upper right corner, in dense old German:

“This I drew myself from a mirror in the year 1484, when I was still a child. Albrecht Dürer.”

The drawing now rests at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, in a climate-controlled drawer that opens only for special exhibitions.

4. Michelangelo, age 12 - The Torment of Saint Anthony

Florence, around 1487.

A twelve-year-old boy bends over a wooden panel of 47 by 34 cm. He is copying an engraving by a German master, Martin Schongauer, which shows Saint Anthony lifted into the air by a swarm of demons.

The boy is apprenticed to Domenico Ghirlandaio, the most fashionable fresco painter in the city. He sweeps the workshop, prepares the panels, stretches the canvases.

The other apprentices are older. He is the youngest in the workshop.

His name is Michelangelo Buonarroti.

The engraving is in black and white. He decides to paint it in full color. And he invents details that are not in the original.

The demons get fish scales because he has been to the fish market on the banks of the Arno and studied them from memory. He also adds the river itself in the lower part of the panel, a Tuscan landscape that is absent from Schongauer’s print.

The panel disappeared for centuries. It resurfaced in a private collection in 2008 and was identified by experts after months of authentication.

It now belongs to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. Bought for around 6 million dollars.

5. Claude Monet, age 15 - Caricatures Sold for 20 Francs

Le Havre, France. 1858.

A fifteen-year-old boy walks into a frame shop on rue de Paris with a stack of charcoal drawings under his arm.

He draws his teachers and the wealthy residents of Le Havre with a sharp, mocking pencil. Big heads, tiny bodies, monstrous noses.

His name is Oscar-Claude Monet.

1 | Guillermo Arias (contemporary)

A Mexican illustrator who builds his career one print at a time.

Hand drawn movie posters. Indie band artwork. Fashion graphics. The kind of images you would expect on a vinyl sleeve, a tour t shirt or a horror film one sheet from the 1970s.

He runs a small brand called Besos Robados that puts his illustrations on physical objects. He also sells through Redbubble, where the same image lands on a mug, a poster or a phone case in one click.

His audience lives on Instagram under the handle @hangtheguille. 2,500 posts and counting. Not a star account, just steady output that has built him a niche reputation among illustration nerds.

No museum, no gallery, no big publisher. Just a phone, a stylus, and a back catalogue that the right people keep recirculating.

2 | Bridget Riley (born 1931)

In 1961 she painted black and white squares. No story, no symbolism, no tricks. Just paint on canvas.

But your eyes refused to stay still. The wall seemed to move. People stood in front of her work and felt seasick.

Four years later MoMA put her in The Responsive Eye exhibition. Overnight she was the most copied painter in New York. A fashion brand printed one of her paintings on a dress before she had even landed at JFK. She sued. She lost.

Riley spent the next sixty years asking the same question with paint: how does the eye lie to itself?

She is 95 today and still working. Her London studio produces canvases the size of a wall.

Sixty five years on the same problem. Few painters have stayed inside a single question that long.

3 | Georges Lemmen (1865–1916)

A Belgian who joined the most radical art group in Europe at twenty three. Les XX, Brussels, 1888.

Twenty painters who refused the official Salon and invited their own friends instead. Seurat, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, all shown in Belgium before anyone in France gave them a fair viewing.

Lemmen painted in pointillism for ten years. His wife reading. His baby in a bath. His mother in profile. Thousands of tiny dots applied to a child’s bath time.

Then around 1898 he dropped the dots. Said they were too cold. Went back to soft brushwork and his five children growing up.

He also designed type, posters, book covers, fabric patterns. Total Art Nouveau range. Nothing was beneath him.

He died at 51 in Brussels, half forgotten.

Florence, 1475

Sandro fixes the dust on his boots. The January sun grazes the Piazza Santa Croce.

At the start of this new year, merchant cries drown out the hammering of hooves on the cobblestones. The smell of manure and leather. The clanking of armor.

Sandro leans against a column, motionless.

Around him, the crowd pushes toward the stands. Nobles in crimson silk. Bankers in dark caps.

Everyone converges for the Giostra di Giuliano. A joust staged to celebrate the new alliance between Florence, Milan, and Venice. A tournament to the glory of the Medici.

The square has been transformed into an arena. The ground is covered in sand. Wooden barriers mark the track.

Escutcheons decorate the stands, displaying the colors of the great Florentine families, the emblems of the guilds, and the red lily of the city.

The Painter and the Muse

Barely 30 years old. A master painter for three years. A disciple of Lippi and Verrocchio. A friend of Leonardo da Vinci.

Sandro has already created altarpieces for the churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santo Spirito. His Ognissanti workshop is always full.

The protection of Lorenzo the Magnificent guarantees him prestige and security. He rubs shoulders with the greatest Florentine humanists.

The young painter has everything to be fulfilled. Yet, in this moment, his mind is elsewhere.

His gaze sweeps the stand of honor. He searches for a face. The face of Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci.

The most beautiful woman in Italy, the poets say. Married at 16 to Marco Vespucci, cousin of Amerigo, whose name will one day baptize the New World.

Arrived from Genoa six years earlier. Porcelain complexion. Golden hair. A perfect profile.

He knows her. Not intimately. A few exchanged greetings. Furtive glances. Their houses face each other in the Via Nuova, just steps from the Ognissanti church.

The Vespucci family, generous patrons, commissioned a Saint Augustine from him. During receptions at the Medici palace, he watches her. Never for too long.

She belongs to a caste that is not his. She is the pearl of Genoese nobility. He is a tanner’s son.

His father Mariano Filipepi amassed enough to offer him a quality apprenticeship. First with a goldsmith, then in the workshop of his brother Antonio, nicknamed “botticello”, meaning little barrel, for his stocky build.

This nickname became his own. An artist’s name.

The Tournament

A murmur ripples through the crowd. Giuliano de Medici enters the arena.

21 years old, Lorenzo’s younger brother. Tall, athletic. Olive skin, light eyes. The prince of Florentine youth.

His silver armor, encrusted with precious stones, is alone worth 8000 florins. A fortune sparkling in the sun.

His squire unfurls a banner. The one Sandro painted.

Simonetta appears on it as Pallas Athena, with helmet and spear, hair in the wind, amber eyes. Next to her is an olive tree. A chained Cupid tramples glowing embers.

The motto spreads out in golden letters: “The Peerless One”.

Simonetta takes her seat under a canopy of golden silk. A green dress lined with ermine. A transparent veil held by a gold brooch.

Beside her sits her husband Marco. A satisfied smile. The fulfilled owner of a treasure everyone covets.

Giuliano casts a glance toward Simonetta. She replies with a barely sketched smile. A fleeting complicity.

Sandro alone notices it. A twinge. Mixed admiration and jealousy for this young man who can publicly honor the woman he contemplates in silence.

The trumpets sound. The tournament begins. Spears shattering. Horses rearing. Dust rising in sheets.

Giuliano, riding Orso, a black and white steed gifted by the King of Naples, unhorses his opponents one by one. A calculated victory. A political staging.

The tournament ends. Giuliano receives the prize from Simonetta’s hands: a helmet chiseled by Verrocchio’s workshop.

Their fingers brush. A suspended moment. The crowd cheers.

Sandro looks away. He measures the abyss between his status and that of the young Medici.

Tragedy Strikes

A few months pass. Simonetta coughs. Her skin pales. Fever exhausts her.

Doctors prescribe bloodletting and decoctions. Lorenzo sends his own doctor, Maestro Stefano. In vain.

On April 26, 1476, she draws her last breath. She is 23 years old.

Her body, displayed with an uncovered face, is paraded through the city streets. An exceptional funeral procession for a woman.

Lorenzo writes in his sonnets that she “surpassed in death that beauty which, alive, seemed insurmountable”.

Florence mourns its lost beauty.

Giuliano sinks into despair. He is seen several times at the Vespucci home. He asks for Simonetta’s clothes. Objects that belonged to her. A portrait they owned.

He tries to hold onto something of this vanished presence.

Sandro, meanwhile, stays silent. He works relentlessly.

He transposes Simonetta into every single one of his creations. The features repeat, become fixed, become a signature.

Madonnas, nymphs, goddesses. Always the same oval face. The same almond eyes. An obsession, but also the spirit of an era.

Florentine intellectual circles are rediscovering Plato. Humanists develop a doctrine where earthly beauty becomes a reflection of the divine, where the love it arouses elevates the soul toward the sacred.

Simonetta is its incarnation: an ancient muse and an echo of Christian truth. The emblem of an ideal beauty, that of Medici Florence.

Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco, Lorenzo’s cousin, commissions a grand allegory from Sandro in 1478. It will be The Primavera.

Nine figures in an orange grove. In the center, Venus presides. Three Graces dance on the left. Mercury scatters the clouds.

Under the features of Flora and one of the Graces, Simonetta’s face reappears.

The Pazzi Conspiracy

Exactly two years to the day after her death. April 26, 1478, Easter Sunday.

The bells of Florence ring for mass. Inside Santa Maria del Fiore, the faithful kneel beneath Brunelleschi’s dome. Lorenzo and Giuliano de Medici are in the front row.

No one notices the Pazzi slipping between the pillars. A fatal anniversary.

You booked your ticket three months in advance. You arrive in Milan, walk through two glass airlocks that regulate humidity, and they let you into a nearly empty room with twenty four other people.

You have fifteen minutes. Not one more.

The work is there, on the far wall. It has never left this room since 1498. It never will. Leonardo painted it directly onto the wall, using a dry technique, instead of traditional fresco.

That’s what makes it so fragile, and that’s why they only give you fifteen minutes in front of it.

Most visitors look at the faces, count the apostles, try to find Judas. They leave having seen a tense meal, agitated men, Christ in the center.

They saw nothing.

Because what Leonardo painted on this wall is not a dinner. It’s a clock. Every detail, every hand, every object on the tablecloth points toward something that hasn’t happened yet.

A Thursday Evening in Jerusalem

The scene takes place on a Thursday, the eve of Jewish Passover. It must be around seven in the evening, in an upper room lent for the meal.

Every apostle around Christ is identified by Leonardo himself, in a handwritten note he left behind that gives their exact order around the table.

Jesus has just spoken. A few seconds before the instant Leonardo freezes, he pronounced the sentence that tears the table apart: “One of you will betray me.”

It is this exact second the work captures, and this is how Leonardo breaks with a thousand years of tradition.

Every Last Supper painted before his depicted the Eucharist: Jesus taking the bread, blessing it, sharing it with his disciples in a calm, liturgical scene. It was the central theological moment, the institution of the sacrament that founded the Christian mass.

Leonardo set it aside.

The bread and wine remain on the table, present, sacramental, but the instant he chose to freeze is not the blessing. It’s the shockwave that follows the announcement of betrayal.

And this second falls at a very precise moment in the story. In less than twenty hours, the man at the center of the table will be dead. Arrested at night, tried in the morning, flogged, nailed to a cross, he will expire around three in the afternoon the next day.

The dinner we are looking at is the last.

The Knife Behind Judas’s Back

Look to Christ’s right, so to your left, just past Judas’s shoulder.

A hand grips a knife. The blade is turned outward, clenched, ready to strike. The angle is strange. Peter is leaning forward toward John, and his right arm reaches across behind Judas, almost dislocated from his own body.

At a dinner table, nobody holds a knife like this. Past someone else’s shoulder, blade out, fist clenched.

Because Peter, in a few hours, will draw a sword. When the soldiers arrive in the Garden of Gethsemane to arrest Jesus, he will be the one to pull his weapon. He will strike. He will cut off the ear of a servant of the high priest, a man the Gospels name precisely: Malchus.

The blade is already in his hand. Leonardo paints the violence before the act.

Thomas’s Raised Finger

To Christ’s left, Thomas is half hidden behind James. You can barely see anything of him, except one index finger pointed straight at the ceiling.

Nobody around the table is looking up. Nobody is talking about the sky.

This finger has no reason to be raised at a dinner scene.

It will have one, three days later.

Thomas will be absent when the risen Jesus appears to the disciples. He will refuse to believe until he has touched the wounds with his own hands. Jesus will come back specifically for him, hold out his pierced palms and open side, and tell him: “Put your finger here.”

Thomas will push it into the wound. This is the exact gesture for which history will call him “Doubting Thomas.”

The finger he will point into the wound of the risen Christ is already raised. Three days early.

The Open Arms of James the Greater

Right next to Thomas, James the Greater throws his arms back in a gesture of shock. Palms open, chest exposed, head tilted.

For a meal, it’s theatrical. Almost excessive.

In all of Christian iconography, this pose does not belong to dinner guests. It belongs to martyrs. It’s the position of the condemned man offering himself to the blade.

James the Greater will be the first of the twelve to die for his faith. Beheaded in Jerusalem by Herod Agrippa, around 44 AD. Ancient traditions have always depicted him in this posture: arms open, palms to the sky, head thrown back.

Leonardo places him immediately to Christ’s left, and paints him already in the pose he will take at the moment of the blade.

The first death after the master’s.

The Apostle Who Looks Like a Woman

Shift your gaze to the other side of Christ, immediately to his right. The closest disciple has a strange face in this assembly of bearded men.

He is beardless. Young. Elegant. His features are soft, almost feminine. He leans gracefully toward Peter, who whispers in his ear. Everything about him stands out in the row of mature apostles.

This appearance has fueled, since the success of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code in 2003, the most popular theory ever built around a work of art: this is not John pictured here, but Mary Magdalene. The wife of Jesus, mother of his daughter. An entire fictional edifice built on the fineness of this face.

Except that the truth is simpler, and more beautiful.

In the entire Italian pictorial tradition of the 15th century, John is depicted this way. The youngest of the apostles, almost adolescent, beardless, soft featured, sometimes asleep on Christ’s shoulder as the biblical text mentions. Leonardo follows the convention. He’s not hiding anyone.

But his posture tells a different story. Peter leans toward him and speaks into his ear. The Gospel of John recounts that at this precise moment, Peter whispered to him: “Ask him who he’s talking about.”

Leonardo freezes the whisper. The ear extended, the body inclined, Peter’s hand already near his. John is learning the question he will have to ask Christ.

Paris, rue des Grands Augustins, a day in May 1937.

On the fourth floor of an old private mansion, a man of 55 is painting standing up, alone, on a canvas 3.5 meters high and 7.8 meters long.

He started three weeks earlier. He has ten days left before delivery to the Spanish Pavilion at the World’s Fair.

The painting will be called Guernica.

Two women walk into the studio unannounced.

One is 27. Blonde. Her name is Marie Thérèse Walter. She has been living in hiding for ten years in an apartment he pays for.

She just found out he has another mistress.

The other is 30. Brunette. Her name is Dora Maar. A surrealist photographer.

She has been sleeping with him for a year.

Marie Thérèse demands that he choose. Dora refuses to leave.

Picasso does not answer. He keeps painting.

The two women end up grabbing each other. They fight on the floor, in front of the unfinished canvas, while Picasso paints a fallen horse screaming.

He does not step in. He says nothing.

Years later, to one of his biographers, he would say it was one of his finest memories.

Pablo Picasso loved six women in his life.

Two hanged themselves. One ended up in a psychiatric clinic under electroshock.

One died alone in a suburban Paris apartment, paid every month to keep quiet.

One shot herself in the temple ten days before opening a retrospective she had organized herself.

Only one managed to leave in time, to write, to live 101 years.

Picasso used to say, in front of his friends: For me, there are only two kinds of women. Goddesses and doormats.

Here are their stories.

1. Fernande, Montmartre, summer 1904

A storm breaks over the hill.

On the staircase of the Bateau Lavoir, Fernande Olivier comes home soaked to her studio. She is 23.

A man blocks her way. He is holding a small cat. He says nothing.

He hands it to her, he smiles.

His name is Pablo Picasso. He is 22, he arrived from Spain three years earlier, he barely speaks French.

He lives in the room next door, a studio without heat lit by kerosene, where he sleeps on a mattress laid on the floor.

She takes the cat.

Fernande has been at the Bateau Lavoir for a year, on the run from a marriage to an office clerk who used to beat her.

She poses nude for three francs a session for painters in Montmartre.

No training, no family, no dowry. She is beautiful, and that is her only currency.

They spend seven years together.

Fernande poses for every painting of the Rose Period, for Les Demoiselles d’Avignon in 1907, for the first cubist works.

She is the first face of modern Picasso.

She is also his first witness.

In August 1911, the Mona Lisa is stolen from the Louvre. The whole country panics.

Police start digging into the art world, looking at every past theft.

Four years earlier, a friend of Apollinaire had stolen two Iberian statuettes from the same Louvre, and had resold them to Picasso.

Apollinaire is arrested on September 7, 1911, thrown into La Santé prison. To try to save himself, he names Picasso.

Picasso is summoned in turn.

Facing Apollinaire in handcuffs, in front of the judge, he is asked whether he knows this man.

He answers that he has never seen him.

Apollinaire understands. That evening, he cries in Fernande’s arms.

Fernande will have seen Picasso at his worst. He will never forgive her for it.

In 1912, Picasso leaves for Céret with Eva Gouel, the partner of a fellow painter.

Fernande is away for three days. When she comes back to the Bateau Lavoir, the studio is empty.

There is no letter.

She never gets over it.

For decades she lives on odd jobs. Cashier, antiques dealer, French teacher for foreigners.

No child, no husband, smaller and smaller apartments in west Paris.

She writes, because that is all she has left.

In spring 1933, she is preparing the release of a memoir.

Picasso hears about it. He has someone offer her one hundred thousand francs to give up publishing.

She refuses.

A few weeks later, Picasso et ses amis comes out.

The book contains everything: the perjury in front of the judge, Apollinaire weeping in their kitchen, the early years at the Bateau Lavoir.

All Paris grabs for the book.

Picasso sends his lawyers. He has the sequel blocked.

In 1957, the same lawyers come knocking again. She is 76, with almost nothing left.

They offer her a deal. Picasso will pay her one million francs a year, for life, on one condition.

That she never writes another word about him.

She signs. She collects the pension every month for nine years.

On January 29, 1966, Fernande dies alone in a small apartment in Neuilly sur Seine, at 84.

No newspaper is notified. Four people follow the coffin.

Her Souvenirs intimes, the full, uncensored version, would come out in 1988.

Twenty two years after her death, forty years after he had paid her to be silent, she would have the last word.

2. Olga, Rome, spring 1917

Picasso is in Rome to design the sets and costumes for Parade, Jean Cocteau’s new production set to music by Erik Satie.

He attends the Ballets Russes de Diaghilev rehearsals every day at the Teatro Costanzi.

He is 35. He has just lost Eva Gouel, taken by tuberculosis two years earlier at 30.

He is looking for something else.

One of the dancers watches him work.

Her name is Olga Khokhlova, 26, daughter of a colonel of Tsar Nicholas II whose family has been wiped out by the Revolution a few months earlier.

She speaks French and English. She trained at the Bolshoi. She joined Diaghilev in 1912.

When Picasso asks her to marry him, Diaghilev flies into a rage.

Olga is one of his principal dancers, the Madrid season begins in three months. He orders her to choose.

She chooses Picasso. She will never set foot on a stage again.

They marry on July 12, 1918, at the Orthodox church on rue Daru, in Paris.

The witnesses are Jean Cocteau, Max Jacob, and Guillaume Apollinaire, who will die three months later of the Spanish flu at 38.

Olga wears a white dress sewn by Jeanne Paquin.

Olga wants a gentleman. Picasso plays along for three years.

Three piece suits from Camps, a private mansion on rue La Boétie, a Hispano Suiza with a chauffeur, three servants, receptions for all Paris, conversations in careful French.

On February 4, 1921, she gives him a son, Paulo.

Then he starts painting broken shapes again.

Women with monster faces, mouths eating their own chins, breasts where the eyes should be.

Olga, Catholic, aristocratic, trained in classical ballet, does not understand.

She cries in front of the paintings. He paints her crying.

In 1935, she learns he has a mistress of 26 who has just given birth to a baby girl.

She takes Paulo, 14, and leaves rue La Boétie.

She files for legal separation. She refuses to divorce.

She knows what she is doing.

In 1935, a separated wife keeps half of everything painted during the marriage. Divorcing means losing the paintings.

Staying the wife, even far from him, means owning half of the biggest studio in the world.

Olga, daughter of a Russian officer ruined by the Revolution, has figured it out before anyone else.

She will hold on for twenty years. At a distance, silent, impossible to push out.

For those twenty years, she follows him everywhere.

She rents an apartment every time he moves, in Antibes, in Cannes, in Paris, never more than a few streets away.

She writes him almost every week, letters that he stores in a trunk and never reads.

Toward the end, the letters change.

They are no longer letters, they are postcards written in French and Russian, covered in obscene insults and threats.

The postman brings them to the villa. Picasso burns them without opening them.

Olga dies of cancer on February 11, 1955, in Cannes, alone in a clinic room.

Picasso does not attend the funeral. Paulo, 34, goes alone.

Fernande and Olga held on. One through writing, the other through the law.

Two old women who died alone, but on their feet.

The next four will break. Early. And badly.

Their names are Marie Thérèse, Dora, Françoise, and Jacqueline.

Coyoacán, Calle Londres, corner of Allende.

A line of people runs along a cobalt blue wall all the way to the corner. Thirty of them. Tickets are booked online three months ahead. No photos inside unless you pay for a permit.

The gate opens. You walk in.

Frida Kahlo was born in this house on July 6, 1907. She died here on July 13, 1954, in the upstairs bedroom.

Forty seven years between the two dates. And a house rebuilt three times over.

The Facade on Londres

The house sits on a corner. Two nearly windowless blocks, cobalt blue stucco, red brick base, wrought iron grilles.

It was built in 1904 by Frida’s father, Guillermo Kahlo, official photographer of national monuments under Porfirio Díaz, the dictator who ruled Mexico through the end of the nineteenth century.

A German from Pforzheim, a small town in the south of Baden. Naturalized Mexican, epileptic, quiet. Frida always said he taught her everything. The original walls were pale stucco with French moldings.

Everything falls apart in 1911. Díaz is overthrown. Guillermo loses his government commissions. The house is mortgaged. The family sinks.

In 1913, Frida is six. Polio. Nine months in bed. Her right leg comes out shorter and thinner than the left. Guillermo makes her play football, wrestle, swim to build the muscle back. The kids at school call her Frida Pata de Palo. Peg leg.

In August 1929, Frida marries Diego Rivera, the most famous muralist in Mexico. He is twenty years older, weighs nearly three hundred pounds, and has had several women before her.

He puts the money on the table at the bank and pays off the mortgage. The deed goes into Frida’s name.

In the early 1940s, when the couple moves back in for good, Diego has the outer walls painted over in that blue. Nobody knows exactly why. He used to say it was to keep the spirits away.

The Patio

You cross a small vestibule. Then the courtyard opens up all at once.

Four hundred square meters of open sky in the middle of a house with eight hundred built around it.

In the center, a small stepped pyramid, four tiers of black volcanic rock. Diego had it built in the 1940s to display his collection. He collected pre Columbian art with no plan, no budget, no limit. Fifty thousand pieces by the time he died. Most of them are now in a museum he had built two kilometers away. Here, a handful, arranged like an altar.

Around the pyramid: agaves, yuccas, cactus columns, bougainvillea. Frida and Diego ripped out the European plants the father had brought in. They kept only what grows wild in Mexico.

And the animals. In the 1940s the courtyard was a zoo.

Fulang Chang and Caimito were two spider monkeys, gifts from Diego. Frida carried them in a sling, let them climb through her hair. She painted them into six self portraits. When she was too weak to go outside, Caimito slept at the foot of her bed.

Granizo the little deer. She bought him from a merchant in Coyoacán in 1939. A fawn that followed her around the patio. In 1946 she painted The Wounded Deer: nine arrows stuck in a deer’s body with Frida’s head. Granizo died not long after. Nobody knows what from.

Bonito the Amazon parrot joined every dinner at the table. He did tricks for a pat of butter. When he missed his trick, he pecked the guests’ ankles. Diego laughed. In 1941, Frida painted him in Me and My Parrots: her at the center, four birds perched on her, red background.

There were also hairless xoloitzcuintle dogs said to descend from Aztec gods, two turkeys, a female eagle named Gertrudis Caca Blanca, and doves in cages around the patio.

When a visitor bored her, Frida would release a monkey on them.

The Kitchen

Yellow floor, yellow walls, blue and yellow tiles around the stove. A charcoal and wood stove, built into the masonry, never replaced.

Diego banned gas from the kitchen. He said gas kills the taste.

This is where the couple’s private rivalries played out.

When Frida married Diego in 1929, she did not know how to cook. Diego loved the food of his first wife, Lupe Marín, whom he had left noisily a few years earlier.

Frida invited Lupe to teach her. Lupe agreed.

She came to Coyoacán. She showed Frida how to make the mole poblano, the thick chocolate and chili sauce that Diego preferred. The huazontles, wild greens fried in batter, on Sundays. The enchiladas de flor de calabaza, squash blossom.

The mole recipe is still pinned to the wall, in Lupe’s handwriting. Between the two women, a strange friendship made of laughter and low blows. Lupe would hang around the house for another twenty years. She always complained that Frida kept her paintbrushes in the kitchen pots.

The cook came from a village in Michoacán and stayed until Frida’s death. She was the one who bought live chickens at the Coyoacán markets and plucked them in the courtyard.

On a wall above the braziers, small clay cups spell out two words: Frida, Diego. Clay doves hold a knot in their beaks.

Touching. Except Frida didn’t make it.

The arrangement dates from 1957, three years after her death. The poet in charge of the museography installed it for the public opening.

The Dining Room

Right next door. Yellow walls, open shelves overflowing with green and blue glazed ceramics.

From the ceiling hang life sized Judas figures made of papier mâché, the kind people used to stuff with firecrackers and burn on Holy Saturday. Diego collected hundreds. He bought them from an illiterate craftswoman at a Mexico City market whom he called his Judera de cámara, his personal supplier.

In one corner, a hand cranked phonograph. Frida played corridos, traditional Mexican ballads, and guests often ended the evening singing rancheras, the great sentimental songs of the country.

On a shelf, two ceramic clocks. Hands frozen.

One marks the hour Frida and Diego decided to divorce, in November 1939. The other, the hour they remarried in San Francisco, December 8, 1940.

Between the two, one year. And a sister.

Cristina Kahlo was Frida’s younger sister, eleven months apart, born June 1908. Dark haired, gentle, less brilliant, mother of two small children.

In 1934, Diego started painting Cristina. First clothed, then nude. Then he slept with her for months.

Frida found out through a friend.

She left the house in San Ángel, a neighborhood on the other side of Mexico City where she lived with Diego. She moved alone into an apartment downtown. She cut her hair off with a razor.

In the months that followed, Frida painted A Memory, herself with her heart torn out at her feet, and My Dress Hangs There, her Tehuana dress, the embroidered costume worn by women in southern Mexico, hanging empty above New York.

She came back in 1935. The forgiveness took years.

Cristina stayed in the family until the end. In July 1954, she was the one who washed Frida’s body and held the wake in this dining room before the transfer to the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico’s national theater.

The Living Room

Former reception room, opening onto the patio. Today it is the museum’s first gallery. But this is where the house received its guests.

Frida greeted them in Tehuana robes, which she had adopted as a uniform after her marriage.

Starting in the late 1930s, the living room saw everyone who mattered in Mexico’s world of exiles, artists, and photographers pass through.

André Breton spent four months in Mexico in the spring of 1938 and stayed several weeks here. His wife Jacqueline Lamba wandered the patio and became Frida’s lover.

The Hungarian photographer Nickolas Muray, one of Frida’s most enduring lovers, photographed her against blue walls.

The actress Dolores del Río came for tequilas. Isamu Noguchi, Siqueiros, Miguel Covarrubias, American painters who came to see Diego. All of bohemian Coyoacán passed through this room.

In 1938, the actor Edward G. Robinson sat here with a coffee and left with four of Frida’s paintings, paid in cash at two hundred dollars each.

On the walls today, three canvases.

Viva la Vida, long live life, painted eight days before her death. Open watermelons and black letters.

The portrait of her father, which Frida finished in 1952, eleven years after old Guillermo’s death. The dedication reads: “To my father, courageous because he suffered sixty years of epilepsy without ever stopping work, and because he fought Hitler.”

And El marxismo dará salud a los enfermos, Marxism will heal the sick, unfinished. Frida holds a red book. Giant hands support her in place of her crutches. She has just lost her right leg, amputated below the knee in August 1953.

She has eight months to live and refuses to admit it.

Diego’s Bedroom

Small room on the ground floor. An enormous denim jumpsuit on a rack, wide brimmed hats, a work jacket. Diego rarely sleeps here.

He spends most nights in his studio in San Ángel.

1 | Chris Cyprus (born 1971)

He left school and joined the building trade in Manchester. No art school. No theory. No permission.

For years he painted watercolours on the side. Then a trip to the south of France in 2001 changed everything. The heat made watercolour impossible. He switched to oils and never went back.

His subject? English allotments. Sheds, potato patches, old men in boots tending cabbages at dusk.

Sounds dull. It isn’t. His allotments glow like they’re lit from inside. Orange light pouring over rusted wheelbarrows.

In 2025 Sky Arts made him one of their Landscape Artists of the Year. The builder is now one of Britain’s most collected painters.

2 | Lorenzo Lotto (c.1480–1556)

He was Titian’s contemporary. He lost every major Venetian commission to him.

So he left. Bergamo, the Marches, small towns in the middle of nowhere. He kept a diary of every commission and every patron who tried to haggle him down. It survives. It’s one of the most vivid self portraits any Renaissance painter left behind.

His faces are the giveaway. While other Venetians painted beauty, Lotto painted anxiety. A young man biting his lip. A widow clutching a rosary too tight. Real people, caught mid thought.

He ended his days as a lay brother at the Holy House of Loreto, donating his few remaining possessions to the sanctuary. Died poor, nearly forgotten.

Today he is considered one of the most psychologically complex painters of the entire Renaissance.

3 | Kay Sage (1898–1963)

American heiress. Raised in Italy, married an Italian prince, walked out of the marriage at forty.

She moved to Paris, joined the Surrealists, fell in love with Yves Tanguy. They lived together in rural Connecticut for the rest of his life.

Her paintings are the strangest things American surrealism ever produced. Empty landscapes. Endless horizons. Huge architectural scaffolds draped in white cloth, standing in deserts that go nowhere.

When Tanguy died suddenly in 1955, she fell apart. Cataracts took her eyesight. She kept writing poems.

In 1963 she shot herself in the heart. Her will left every painting she owned to MoMA.

4 | Anna Ileby (born 1984)

Swedish. Born in Värmland. Started as an illustrator, then decided illustrating wasn’t enough.

Her paintings are impossibly quiet. A woman alone in a yellow kitchen. A child facing a window. Empty corridors bathed in Scandinavian winter light.

Realistic but never photographic. Colour is turned up just slightly, as if every scene is remembered rather than seen.

The title of her personal website is her manifesto: An artist cannot fail.

She is one of the most interesting young realist painters working in Sweden right now. Most of the art world outside Scandinavia hasn’t caught up yet.

5 | Ferdinand Loyen du Puigaudeau (1864–1930)

Gauguin invited him to Tahiti in 1891. His family forbade him to go.

So he stayed in Brittany and painted the night. Religious processions by torchlight. Village fairs lit by paper lanterns. Fireworks reflected on dark water.

Nobody in French painting did night better. Not Van Gogh, not Whistler, not anyone. His glows feel physical. A true, underrated impressionist

1/13 - Tamara de Lempicka (1898–1980)

De Lempicka is the defining painter of Art Deco: glossy surfaces, geometric forms, and women painted with the same sleek power usually reserved for machines and skyscrapers. She fled the Russian Revolution at eighteen, arrived in Paris with nothing, and within four years was the portrait painter the Parisian elite couldn’t stop commissioning.

Her work vanished from galleries after World War II; it took Madonna collecting her paintings in the 1980s for the art world to remember what it had been ignoring.

2/13 - Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675)

Vermeer is the painter of silence: quiet domestic interiors, a woman reading a letter, pouring milk, playing music, lit by a single window, with an attention to light and surface that wouldn't be matched until photography.

He produced only 36 known paintings, used ultramarine ground from lapis lazuli more expensive than gold, and died at 43 with eleven children and catastrophic debts. He was so thoroughly forgotten that nearly two centuries passed before a French critic rediscovered him in 1866 and reintroduced him to the world.

3/13 - Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–c. 1654)

Gentileschi was the first woman admitted to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence and one of the most accomplished Baroque painters of her generation, known for dramatic lighting and psychologically intense scenes of biblical women.

She specialized in heroines: Judith, Susanna, Cleopatra, Lucretia, and in every case the woman holds the sword, the power, or the last word. To get there she survived a public rape trial at seventeen where she was tortured with thumbscrews to verify her testimony, which makes the defiance in her paintings feel earned, not decorative.

4/13 - Mark Rothko (1903–1970)

Rothko is one of the founders of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting: large canvases with soft, hovering rectangles of color that are meant to produce an emotional response as direct as music. He refused to explain his work and insisted his paintings were not about color but about “tragedy, ecstasy, doom.”

He accepted a $35,000 commission for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York, then returned the money after eating there once because he refused to let his work decorate a room built for showing off.

If you’ve ever been to the National Gallery in London, you may have seen the scene. Room 4. A painting over six feet on each side. Two men, life size, standing, surrounded by instruments and books. In front of them, a small crowd.

But the visitors are doing something strange.

Instead of standing in front of the canvas, they shuffle to the right. They lean in. They press themselves almost flat against the wall. And they squint, looking at the painting from a sharp angle.

The painting is called The Ambassadors. It was painted in 1533 by Hans Holbein the Younger, a German painter born in Augsburg, living in London where he worked for the English court. And this painting probably contains more codes, symbols and hidden messages than any other from the Renaissance.

A single number, buried throughout the canvas, is the key to all of it.

Two Men at the Top

Let’s start with the man on the left. He wears a coat lined with lynx fur, one of the most expensive in sixteenth century Europe, reserved for the highest nobility. Underneath, a pink satin doublet: a rare, costly dye that only the wealthiest could afford.

Around his neck, a heavy gold chain. This is not just jewelry. It is the insignia of the Order of Saint Michael, the highest distinction the King of France could bestow. This man is therefore a close associate of Francis I, King of France.

At his side, a dagger. The sheath bears an inscription in Latin: “AET. SVÆ 29.” His age.

And on the terrestrial globe placed between the two men, Holbein slipped in another clue, hidden among the place names, written backwards: the name of a village, Polisy. It is the estate of a family from Champagne, the Dintevilles.

The man is Jean de Dinteville, ambassador of Francis I to the English court.

The man on the right is dressed very differently. A long, dark robe, almost black. Some fur underneath, but discreet, contained. No gold chain. No insignia. In 1533, this outfit says one thing: he is a man of the Church.

His elbow rests on a book whose edge also bears a number: 25. His age.

His name is Georges de Selve. Appointed Bishop of Lavaur by the King of France at the age of 18, sent as a diplomat to Venice, to Rome, to Spain.

Between them, two shelves covered with an Oriental rug, loaded with scientific instruments, books and tools for measuring the sky. Their feet rest on a marble mosaic floor, strangely detailed.

Everything in this image speaks of mastery and confidence. Two brilliant young men, at the height of their time, perfectly in their place.

You have to step closer to the shelf to see that something in this image is wrong.

The Broken String

On the lower shelf, a lute is laid on its side. Holbein rendered it with extraordinary care. Every string, every grain of the wood.

But one of the strings is broken.

It has unraveled and trails limply across the body of the instrument.

In the sixteenth century, the image spoke for itself. A well tuned lute meant harmony: between people, between nations, between believers. When a string breaks, harmony is broken.

Right next to the lute, a leather flute case where four instruments sit neatly in their compartments.

The fifth slot is empty.

Harmony is shattered. The ensemble is incomplete. And Holbein still does not say why.

The Book Between Them

Leaning against the lute, there is a small open music book. The staves are legible. So is the text. It is in German.

When you decipher it, it turns out to be the first hymnal of the Lutheran Reformation, published in 1524 with a preface by Martin Luther himself. The monk who defied the Pope and split Christendom in two.

His book is placed open between a Catholic ambassador and a Catholic bishop.

On the left page: “Come, Holy Spirit, Lord God,” a plea for unity. On the right page: the Ten Commandments according to Luther.

The two pages do not follow each other in the original edition. Holbein chose them and placed them side by side.

Why those two?

“Dividirt”

A second book sits on the same shelf, held open by a wooden set square. It is an arithmetic manual for merchants. Columns of numbers. Division exercises.

The first word on the page, in large type: “Dividirt.”

Let it be divided.

And a little further down, the fraction ½.

The broken string. The missing flute. Luther between two Catholics. And the word “divided” spelled out in plain sight.

In 1533, the King of England, Henry VIII, wants to divorce Catherine of Aragon. The Pope refuses. So Henry VIII does something no English king has ever done: he breaks with Rome. His Parliament passes a law that severs England from the Catholic Church.

The Pope excommunicates the King.

Christian Europe, united for centuries, splits in two.

It is in the middle of this crisis that Dinteville and de Selve find themselves in London. And it is in the middle of this crisis that Holbein paints them.

Everything falls into place.

The string that breaks is the harmony of Christendom coming apart. The missing flute is an incomplete ensemble.

Luther placed between two Catholics is the fracture laid bare between the two men sent to prevent the schism. And the two hymn pages placed side by side, grace and law: a silent plea for reconciliation.

But Holbein painted two shelves. And the second one hides something even more unsettling.

The upper shelf is covered with astronomical instruments: a celestial globe, several sundials, instruments for measuring the sky. None of them show the same time. One dial reads 9:30, another 10:30. One is calibrated for a latitude that corresponds to North Africa, not England.

These are precision instruments. And they are all deliberately set wrong.

On the first sundial, the altitude of the sun is set to 27 degrees. On the instrument right next to it, an angle is marked: 27 degrees. A third instrument, the one that measures the position of the stars: 27 degrees.

Go back to the arithmetic book, the one that says “Dividirt.” The results of the exercises on the page are all multiples of 27.

The number is everywhere. Hidden in every instrument, coded into the calculations, buried in the angles. Holbein planted it across the entire painting.

27 degrees is the exact altitude of the sun at four in the afternoon on April 11, 1533. That day was Good Friday. Four in the afternoon is the hour that follows the death of Christ on the cross.

The celestial globe confirms it: it shows the sky of April 11, 1533. But its latitude is not that of London, where the painting was made.

It is the latitude of Rome.

The city of the Pope. At the moment it loses control of Christendom.

The lower shelf tells the story of the fracture. The upper shelf points to a date and a place.

And everything directs the eye toward a spot on the canvas that no one understands: a large grayish shape, stretched diagonally across the floor in the foreground.

In the late 1700s, a generation of European painters decided that reason and order had gone far enough. They wanted raw emotion. Storms, ruins, madness, sublime terror, the overwhelming power of nature.

You know the big names: Delacroix, Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, Goya.

Here are ten others, just as powerful, that you’ve probably never heard of.

1 | Johan Christian Dahl (1788–1857)

He lived directly above Caspar David Friedrich in Dresden. They were godfathers to each other’s children.

Friedrich was the brooding loner. Dahl was the sociable one. They painted side by side for decades anyway.

The difference? Friedrich loaded every tree with metaphysical weight. Dahl just looked. Really looked.

The way light falls on a fjord at dusk. Birch trees after a storm. Clouds forming over the North Sea.

He brought Norwegian nature into European painting when no one cared about Scandinavia. Friedrich got the legend. Dahl got the fjords.

2 | Richard Parkes Bonington (1802–1828)

Dead at twenty five. Younger than Keats.

In that short life, he shared a studio with Delacroix in Paris. Delacroix later called his watercolors “a type of diamond, both brilliant and hard.”

That’s Delacroix talking about someone else’s work. Think about that.

His coastal scenes have this liquid, translucent quality. The sky isn’t painted on top of the canvas. It feels like the canvas is made of sky.

Tuberculosis took him before he’d even peaked.

1 | Saint Peter : The Rock

Who is he?

• A fisherman named Simon, renamed by Christ : “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church.”
  The word Peter means rock. The whole Church rests on a pun.

• Leader of the twelve apostles, but the most human :
  he panics, he doubts, he denies knowing Christ three times in one night.
  Then he hears a rooster crow.

• Crucified upside down in Rome :
  he did not consider himself worthy to die like his master.

• First Pope. Every Pope since claims a direct line back to him.
  The keys on the Vatican flag? His keys.

Secret Codes to Recognize Him

• 🔑 The two keys (gold and silver)
  No other figure in Christian art carries keys.
  Gold opens heaven. Silver governs earth.
  If you spot keys anywhere in a painting, it is Peter.
  Every joke about “Saint Peter at the pearly gates” comes from this image.
  It escaped the museums and entered everyday language.

• 🔵 Gold and blue robes
  Peter almost always wears a golden yellow cloak over a blue tunic.
  The gold signals his role as leader of the apostles.
  In a crowded scene, look for this color pair first.
  It will find him faster than the keys.

• 🧔 The short white curly beard
  The Bible never describes his face. Artists invented it :
  stocky, square jaw, tight white curls.
  He looks like a man who hauled fishing nets his whole life.
  One rough face, one refined face. If you see them side by side, Peter is always the rough one.

  

• 🐓 The rooster
  Look for it in Passion scenes, perched on a wall or crowing in the background.
  Jesus predicted it : “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”
  The rooster does not symbolize dawn.
  It marks the exact second a man discovered he was a coward.

• ✝️ The inverted cross
  In martyrdom scenes, he hangs upside down. He chose this.
  For 2,000 years it meant humility, nothing else.
  Its modern satanic association would have bewildered every painter who ever used it.

• 🐟 The fishing net
  In calling scenes, when Christ recruits him on the lake.
  The net overflows with fish, tearing under the weight.
  The net is what he was. The keys are what he became.

• 👑 The papal tiara
  In later paintings, he wears the three tiered papal crown.
  No fisherman ever wore this. Patrons put it there to make papal authority look ancient.
  The tiara is not history. It is advertising.

The detail to spot :

Look for the duo. Peter almost never appears alone.

He stands paired with Paul, framing Christ or the Virgin like two pillars.
Peter is always on Christ’s right (your left as viewer). White beard, keys = Peter.

Dark beard, sword = Paul.
Two old men flanking a holy figure? Check their hands.

Periods and movements :

• The Middle Ages showed him frontal, seated, keys in hand.
  A symbol of authority, not a man.

• The Renaissance turned the handover of the keys into a grand spectacle.
  Painters used perspective to make the gesture look monumental, like the founding of an institution happening live.

• The Baroque focused on his failure.
  The “Tears of Saint Peter” became a genre : an old man alone in the dark, weeping, the rooster somewhere in the background.
  Even the founder of the Church needed forgiveness.

1. Vincent Van Gogh — Portrait of Adeline Ravoux (1890)

You know this painting. A young girl in blue, looking away, almost melancholic.

Her name was Adeline Ravoux. She was 13. Her dad ran the tiny inn in Auvers sur Oise where Van Gogh rented a room for 3.50 francs a night. It would be his last home.

Van Gogh painted her three times in one sitting. Adeline hated the result. She said it looked nothing like her.

Here’s the twist: decades later, someone found a photograph of Adeline as an old woman. The resemblance to the painting was jaw dropping.

Van Gogh had painted the woman she would become, not the girl sitting in front of him.

He died 70 days after checking into that inn. She lived to be 90.

2. Gustav Klimt — Portrait of Emilie Flöge (1902)

Gustav Klimt is the guy who painted “The Kiss.” One of the most reproduced images on Earth. Gold leaf, intertwined lovers, you’ve seen it on every poster and tote bag.

This portrait is of Emilie Flöge. She ran a high fashion salon in Vienna and designed clothes that were revolutionary for the time: flowing, uncorseted, made for women who wanted to breathe.

They met through family. Klimt’s brother married Emilie’s sister. When the brother died young, Gustav kept showing up at the Flöge house. He and Emilie spent every summer together at a lake in Austria. For over twenty years.

Were they together?

Nobody really knows.

But when Klimt had a stroke in 1918, his last words were: “Get Emilie.”

3. Alfons Mucha — Precious Stones: Emerald (1900)

If you’ve ever seen an Art Nouveau poster with a beautiful woman surrounded by flowing hair and ornamental patterns, chances are it was by Alfons Mucha.

He basically invented that style.

This piece is part of a series where four women each embody a precious stone. Emerald, ruby, amethyst, topaz. Every color in the composition matches the gem.

Nobody knows the model’s name. She vanished from history.

What survived is Mucha’s armchair in the background, the one with carved animal heads. That same chair shows up in dozens of his works. It was practically his co-star.

Her face is now in museums across the world. And we still don’t know who she was.

WHO IS GOYA?

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes is born on March 30, 1746, in Fuendetodos, a remote village in Aragon. Son of a frame gilder and a mother from minor nobility, nothing destines him for glory.

At 14, he enters apprenticeship with a painter in Zaragoza and spends 4 years copying prints.

He attempts the Royal Academy competition in Madrid twice. Two failures. The jury finds his style too personal, not academic enough.

He then travels to Italy at his own expense to study the masters. Upon his return, he marries the sister of a court painter. The door finally opens.

He becomes painter to the king in 1786, at age 40. Late for the era.

In 1792, catastrophe. A mysterious illness strikes him down. Vertigo, hallucinations, partial paralysis. In 1793, he returns to Madrid. Deaf for life. He is 46 years old.

This deafness cuts the thread. The cheerful painter who decorated royal tapestries disappears. The dark Goya is born.

He then paints what no one had dared paint before: war seen through the eyes of victims, unfiltered human madness, the monsters of the unconscious.

In 1808, Madrid rises up against Napoleon. Goya witnesses the massacres and documents them. In 1814, Ferdinand VII returns to power. Repression.

Goya, suspected of liberal sympathies, goes into exile in Bordeaux in 1824. He dies there in 1828, at 82.

That’s why the debate makes sense: Goya is the bridge. Between the Old Regime and modernity. Between Velázquez and Picasso.

Some say he invented modern art. Others that he was an academically mediocre painter who got lucky living through a terrible era.

We’re going to settle this. With numbers.

THE CARD

TEC (Technique/Mastery): 84/99

What it judges: Drawing ability, perspective management, anatomy, texture rendering, sfumato, compositional complexity. Does the painter master their tool or are they struggling?

Goya fails the Academy competition twice. The jury prefers safer, smoother candidates. His personal style disturbs them.

When he lands his first fresco commission for the Basilica del Pilar, they force him to redo everything. Too sloppy, say the academics. His brother-in-law has to retouch his work. Public humiliation.

Yet Goya builds his paintings like Velázquez built his. Through color, through light, through broad brushstrokes that create the illusion from a distance but dissolve up close.

In The Third of May 1808, the martyr’s white shirt is applied with a palette knife. Impasto, brutal. From afar, it shines like a host. Up close, it’s crushed matter.

This brutal technique reinforces the urgency of the message.

His true mastery explodes in printmaking. He is, alongside Rembrandt, the absolute summit of this art. He creates deep, velvety, unsettling blacks. His print series rival the greatest masters of the medium.

But compared to Ingres, who draws like a Swiss watchmaker, Goya looks sloppy. Compared to Raphael, where each figure occupies exactly the right place, Goya looks unbalanced.

The academics were right about one thing: Goya wasn’t seeking formal perfection. He was seeking expressive truth.

INV (Innovation/Revolution): 92/99

This is the “Avant-garde” rating. Did this painter change the rules of the game? Did he invent a new way of seeing the world? Or did he “just” copy his predecessors very well?

Before Goya, war was painted as grand spectacle. Muscular heroes dying nobly on orderly battlefields.

After Goya, lying becomes impossible.

The Third of May 1808 shows an anonymous firing squad facing terrified civilians. No glory. No meaning. Just the killing machine grinding flesh.

Goya invents modern war reporting. In the 82 plates of The Disasters of War, he engraves what he saw. Hanged bodies. Raped women. Starving children.

Some plates bear the inscription Yo lo vi. I saw it.

No heroes. No God. No morality. Just documented horror.

He also invents the pictorial exploration of madness and the unconscious.

With the Black Paintings, painted directly on the walls of his house between 1819 and 1823, he plunges into nightmare. The Witches’ Sabbath shows emaciated old women worshiping a giant goat. Duel with Cudgels shows two men sinking into sand while beating each other to death.

These paintings weren’t meant to be seen. Goya painted them for himself alone, deaf, isolated, old.

He opens the door to Surrealism 100 years early.

David, his exact contemporary, revolutionizes style by imposing Neoclassicism. Goya revolutionizes content. He says: you can paint ugliness, madness, absurd death. And it’s art.

Picasso will say that Guernica doesn’t exist without him.

In the 1820s, a group of American painters looked at the wilderness around them and decided it was sacred.

They painted mountains, rivers and forests with the kind of reverence Europeans reserved for cathedrals. This was the Hudson River School, America’s first major art movement.

You probably know Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Church.

Here are ten others who deserve the same attention.

1 | Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823–1900)

His autumn colors were so vivid that when he exhibited in London, critics refused to believe American trees actually looked like that.

So he had real leaves shipped from New York to prove it.

Cropsey painted fall like no one else. Entire valleys burning orange and crimson, rivers reflecting skies on fire, sunlight caught in the canopy like stained glass.

Queen Victoria was a fan. The American public worshipped him. Then Impressionism arrived, his style went out of fashion, and he died nearly forgotten, selling his estate to pay debts.

The leaves, though. Nobody has ever painted leaves like that.

2 | Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904)

While every other Hudson River School painter was going big — mountains, waterfalls, canyons — Heade went small. And horizontal. And quiet.

His salt marshes are the opposite of grandiose. Flat light. Tiny haystacks. A sky that takes up three quarters of the canvas. It shouldn’t work. It’s mesmerizing.

Then there’s the other Heade. Three trips to South America to paint orchids and hummingbirds in the jungle. Over forty tiny canvases of iridescent birds hovering in tropical heat.

He planned a book called The Gems of Brazil. It never got published. The paintings survived. They’re the most original still lifes in American art.

3 | William Louis Sonntag (1822–1900)

Here’s the irony: he’s considered a central figure of the Hudson River School, but he never painted the Hudson River valley.

His thing was the Ohio River Valley where he grew up, and idealized Italian ruins he painted after living in Florence. Grand, sweeping, deeply romantic. Thomas Cole without ever having studied under Cole.

He also co-created a massive panorama of Milton’s Paradise Lost. A painting you literally walked through.

Died in 1900 as one of America’s most respected landscape painters. Today, almost nobody knows his name.

4 | Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–1880)

If you’ve ever been to the National Gallery in London, you’ve seen it happen. A small crowd, five or six people huddled in front of a not-very-large painting, phones raised, trying to capture the reflection in a tiny convex mirror. The painting is 82 by 60 centimeters. It dates from 1434. And it is probably the most clue-packed painting in the entire history of Western art.

This is the Arnolfini Portrait, painted by Jan van Eyck. Van Eyck was the personal painter of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, the most powerful man in Europe at the time. An artist so respected that when his treasurers once forgot to pay him, the Duke sent them a furious letter saying he would never find another painter this good. He was also entrusted with secret diplomatic missions. He was as much a spy as he was a painter. (I tell his incredible story here.)

And in this painting, he hid clues everywhere. Let’s look at them one by one.

The oranges

Let’s start with a detail most visitors don’t even notice. On the windowsill and on the chest below it, there are oranges. Three, maybe four.

It looks unremarkable. It’s anything but.

This is Bruges, 1434, northern Europe. Oranges come from the Iberian Peninsula, by ship. They cost an absolute fortune. Placing oranges in plain sight in a portrait sends a very clear message: we can afford this.

Bruges is the commercial capital of Europe at this point. Italian, Spanish, and Hanseatic merchants all cross paths here. The Arnolfini are silk traders from Lucca, Italy, who supply the court of the Duke of Burgundy directly. Every object in this room says something about their wealth. The oranges are the first clue. The carpet on the floor is another: it’s an Oriental rug with geometric Anatolian patterns. In Bruges, a rug like this was so precious that people placed them on tables, not on the ground. Here, it’s being walked on.

But the oranges also carry a religious meaning. In Flemish painting, the orange often replaces the apple of original sin. They evoke the Garden of Eden. The Fall. Here, they sit in the light from the window, and if you look very, very closely, you can see that Van Eyck painted their reflection in the polished wood. The reflection of a piece of fruit in a piece of furniture. On a panel 82 centimeters wide.

The shoes

In the foreground, a pair of wooden pattens tossed on the floor. These are the man’s street shoes, still caked with mud from the roads. The woman’s red shoes are placed further back, near the bed.

They are both barefoot indoors.

In the Bible, when God speaks to Moses at the burning bush, he says: “Remove your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” It’s a reference any fifteenth-century viewer would have understood immediately. Whatever is happening in this room is sacred. This is consecrated ground.

The rosary

To the left of the mirror, hanging from a nail in the wall, is a rosary made of amber beads. In Flanders, this was a traditional engagement gift.

But what’s extraordinary is the way Van Eyck painted it. Light enters through the window, catches the upper left edge of each bead as a bright white dot, passes through the translucent amber, and comes out the other side as a small orange crescent. Each bead works like a tiny lens. On top of that, Van Eyck painted the shadow of the cord on the wall and the reflections the beads cast onto the plaster.

These beads are a few millimeters across in the actual painting. He probably worked with a single-hair brush.

The green dress (and no, she’s not pregnant)

The woman wears a voluminous green dress lined with white ermine. The amount of fabric is enormous. This type of dyed wool could cost more than silk. Green symbolizes fertility and hope.

And yes, she looks pregnant. People have believed it for centuries. A Spanish inventory from 1700 actually describes the painting as “a pregnant German woman in green.”

Except she’s not. The protruding belly is simply the fashion of the time. Every elegant woman in the fifteenth century is depicted this way. The dress is so heavy it has to be gathered up in front to walk, which naturally creates this rounded silhouette. In the Ghent Altarpiece, Van Eyck’s great masterpiece, he paints Eve completely naked with exactly the same belly. It’s a beauty standard, not a pregnancy.

The mirror

This is the center of the painting. Literally. Van Eyck placed it exactly between the two figures, at the central point of the composition.

It’s a convex mirror, curved outward. In its distorted reflection, you can see the entire room in reverse, the backs of the couple, and two small figures stepping through the doorway. One in red, one in blue.

The figure in red is almost certainly Van Eyck himself. He’s recognizable by the red chaperon he wears in his self-portrait from 1433. The painter placed himself inside his own painting, in a reflection, two centuries before Velázquez did the same thing in Las Meninas.

But the truly mind-blowing part is the frame of the mirror. It’s decorated with ten tiny medallions. Each one measures just a few millimeters in the actual painting. And each one depicts a scene from the Passion of Christ, from the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane through to the Resurrection. The figures inside them are identifiable. Van Eyck probably used a magnifying glass to paint them.

And the scenes are not arranged randomly. All the ones before Christ’s death are on the man’s side. All the ones showing the death, the entombment, and the resurrection are on the woman’s side.

Keep that in mind.

The chandelier and the candle

On the ceiling, a brass chandelier with six branches. Six spots for candles, but only one is lit.

It’s above the man.

Above the woman: nothing. Just melted wax, still dripping, where a candle once burned.

Candle lit, candle out. Alive, dead? Hold that thought too.

The signature

Just above the mirror, Van Eyck wrote on the wall in very careful Gothic lettering: “Johannes de eyck fuit hic 1434.” Jan van Eyck was here, 1434.

Normally, when a painter signs a painting, they write “made this” or “painted this.” Van Eyck wrote “was here.” He doesn’t claim to have created this image. He says he was present. Like a witness. Like a notary signing a legal document.

And the lettering itself imitates the calligraphy used in legal documents of the time. It’s the only time in his entire career that he placed his signature directly on the painted surface.
