Horenka, Ukraine, a village on the outskirts of Kyiv. Fall 2022.

In the spring, the Russian army pushed this close to Kyiv, a few miles from Bucha. It left behind houses split open, walls still standing, with no roof overhead and no windows.

In front of one of those walls, two men are at work, cans of spray paint in hand.

Tetiana Reznychenko lives in the village. She brings them coffee. The two men stop long enough to drink it, then go back to the wall where they left off.

When they leave, the wall has changed. A bearded man now sits in a bathtub in the middle of the roofless house, scrubbing his back.

On November 11, 2022, a photo of that wall appears on Banksy's Instagram account, one of seven walls painted in Ukraine.

In Hostomel, the next town over, a woman in a bathrobe and curlers holds a fire extinguisher, a gas mask over her face.

Banksy's stencils go up overnight, on walls in Bristol, in London, in Paris, on the barrier that separates Israel from the West Bank. His little girl letting go of a red balloon is known around the world.

He is not. He never shows his face and never gives his name. He claims his walls after the fact on Instagram, and a company, Pest Control, authenticates his work.

For 20 years, newspapers, fans, and researchers have hunted for the man behind the name. Several names have surfaced.

The Phone

A Reuters team decides to put those names to the test. The team is covering the war around Kyiv, from Bucha to Irpin, and the bathtub wall stops it cold: if one of the men suspected of being Banksy held a spray can in Horenka, someone in the village saw his face.

Reuters gathers photos of the suspects. A few weeks after the walls go public, one of its reporters arrives in Horenka with the photos on his phone.

He goes from one villager to the next, always with the same question: who got a close look at the two men at the wall? The first few people he asks send him deeper into the village. The answers end up pointing to a single person, the woman with the coffee.

Tetiana had watched them work, faces uncovered.

He hands her the phone.

One face, then another, then another. Tetiana swipes through them with her thumb, taking her time.

On one of them, her eyes go wide. She lingers on that one a little longer than on the others.

She has never seen this man, she says, and she hands the phone back.

The Frontman

Robert Del Naja is the frontman of Massive Attack, a band from Bristol.

Reuters wasn't the first to think of him. In the spring of 2010, Massive Attack was touring North America. Banksy pieces turned up in San Francisco, in Toronto, in Boston, each time within days of a concert.

In 2016, a journalism student in Glasgow lined up the coincidences, and the British press ran with them.

Del Naja denied it.

"It's purely a matter of logistics and coincidence, nothing more than that."

If he painted in Horenka, Del Naja had to have entered Ukraine in the days before, and someone, somewhere, has a record of it.

The reporter turns to sources who track who crosses the Ukrainian border, and when. He gives them a name, Robert Del Naja, and a window: the days before the walls.

The answer comes back.

Robert Del Naja crossed from Poland into Ukraine on October 28, 2022. He crossed back out on November 2. The bathtub wall appeared on Banksy's account nine days later.

For Reuters, everything fits.

Before the music, Del Naja painted. In the 1980s, he spent his nights in the streets of Bristol putting up graffiti and stencils without permission, signing them 3D. He was among the first in the city to paint that way. The police arrested him several times, and then he traded the cans for music.

In Bristol, on those nights, a boy of about ten watches 3D paint the streets. Years later, it is his turn to cover the city's walls. He signs them Banksy.

In Florence, in the streets that lead up to the cathedral, all you have to do is push open the door of a souvenir shop to find him: the same naked body, printed on kitchen aprons, or, on a fridge magnet, cropped down to a single part, the groin.

Nobody needs to be told who he is, and nobody has missed how small his penis is.

A few streets away, under the glass dome of the Accademia, the original waits, more than 5 meters of white marble. Every year, 2 million people line up on the sidewalk outside to spend a few minutes at his feet.

This David was born of a fight. Not the one in the Bible, but a personal one.

The round chapel

In Rome, in 1499, a round chapel leans against the flank of old St. Peter's. A marble statue has been set up inside, and ever since, the little chapel has never been empty.

Pilgrims, priests, travelers passing through: all of them lower their voices without being told to, and all of them stay longer than they meant to.

A very young woman holds the body of her dead son across her knees, and she looks younger than he does. One arm hangs loose in the air. The marble has been polished until it looks warm.

A young man comes in after the others, stops by the door, and goes no farther. Around the marble, travelers from Lombardy, the region around Milan, circle it slowly. For a long moment they say nothing, and then they all talk at once.

"Who could have carved a thing like that?"

"A Roman. Everything here is Roman."

"Look at that arm. No Roman can do that."

"It's our Gobbo, from Milan."

The man who said it speaks with the pride of someone naming a sculptor from his own town. By the door, the young man has not missed a word. He says nothing, looks at the statue a while longer, then leaves.

He comes back at night, a small lamp in one hand, his tools in the other, and shuts himself in the chapel. The flame catches the band of cloth across the Virgin's chest, and there, with chisel and mallet, letter by letter, he cuts a line of Latin.

That statue is the "Pietà." Since that night, a signature has run across her chest: MICHAEL ANGELUS BONAROTUS FLORENT FACIEBA. Michelangelo Buonarroti, Florentine, made this.

The piece of bread

By now Rome knows the name. The man who bears it is 24, owns no house, sleeps under someone else's roof, and works with a piece of bread in his free hand, eating it without putting down his tool. He lives like a poor man because the money he earns does not stay in Rome. Every time he is paid, part of it goes to Florence.

There, his father, Lodovico Buonarroti, has five sons to feed and almost nothing to feed them on. His small post at the customs house came from the Medici, the bankers who ran Florence; the day the city drove them out, the post went with them, and with it the household's only income.

One day, one of the brothers turns up in Rome with bad news: a merchant wants their father thrown into prison over a debt. Michelangelo puts the brother up at an inn, where he will want for nothing, then sits down and writes to their father.

"Whatever you ask of me, I will send it, even if I have to sell myself as a slave."

Nearly five years go by like this in Rome. Then family business calls him home, and he returns to Florence.

Siena

A commission is waiting for him. In nearby Siena, the cardinal-archbishop wants the man who made the "Pietà" to carve 15 marble saints for the altar of his cathedral: 500 gold coins, delivery within three years, the sculptor paying for the marble.

The cardinal sets only one condition: for those three years, nothing else is to come before his saints.

Michelangelo signs. The commission is secure and well within his abilities, and for the first time his family has three years of income ahead of it. He also has the means to keep a promise made to his brothers: to set them up in a cloth shop.

The ropes

A few weeks later, errands for the shop he has yet to open send him across the city, and his route leads past the workshop of Florence Cathedral, whose yard opens onto the street. Men are hauling on ropes.

At the end of the ropes, slowly, a stone that has lain there for years rises to its feet. What stands before him is a block of marble as tall as three men, stained by years of rain, scarred with old chisel marks.

He knows this block; every Florentine does. The cathedral ordered it in 1464 for an enormous statue meant for the upper reaches of the building, and the marble that arrived proved awkward: very tall, narrow, and shallow from front to back.

Agostino di Duccio, the first to touch it, attacked it at an angle and abandoned the work unfinished, a barely begun figure with a lump of marble sitting in the middle of its chest. Ten years later, Antonio Rossellino, one of the most in-demand sculptors in the city, was handed the block in turn, and he too gave up.

In the 35 years since, the block has stood outdoors, in the rain. The water has softened it, and no one dares touch it anymore.

The cathedral has not given up. It wants a David carved from the block: the little shepherd of the Bible whose sling brings down Goliath, the one Florence has adopted as its emblem. It has the stone raised that day, with Michelangelo looking on from the edge of the yard, to find out whether it can still be used.

At the foot of the stone

Upright, it can be used, if someone dares. The cathedral's overseers happen to have a Florentine sculptor on hand, just back in town, the man who made the "Pietà." They bring him to the foot of the block and tell him what they are offering.

"Two years of work, and 144 gold coins, guaranteed."

"The marble is ours. You won't have to buy a thing."

He has everything to lose. Siena is promising him 500 gold coins; here, they guarantee him 144. He has just given the cardinal his word, and taking this block means making the cardinal wait, with his family's money at stake.

It also means taking on a stone that two masters abandoned before him. And if he fails, he fails at home, in front of all Florence, and the name he cut one night into the Virgin's chest goes down with him.

And yet, on August 16, 1501, Michelangelo says yes.

That yes has a reason, and this David carries it. You will discover:

Auvers-sur-Oise, Sunday 27th July 1890

Five o’clock strikes from the bell tower of Notre-Dame. Vincent van Gogh opens his eyes in his attic room. Seven square metres beneath the roof of the auberge Ravoux. A narrow bed, a washstand, a cupboard. The skylight admits the first glimmers of dawn.

He rises with practised ease. At thirty-seven, his face bears the marks of past crises. Outside, cockerels crow in the village backyards. Vincent passes his hands over his gaunt face, smooths his ginger beard.

He dresses slowly. Canvas trousers, white shirt, jacket worn at the elbows. The same ritual for two months since he took lodgings here at three francs fifty a day.

He descends the narrow staircase. In the corridor, he passes Adeline Ravoux coming up, arms laden with laundry. The thirteen-year-old girl smiles. “Good morning, Monsieur Vincent.” “Good morning, Adeline.”

His voice carries a slight Dutch accent. Adeline continues her ascent. Since May, she has observed this discreet lodger who speaks hesitant but comprehensible French. Always polite, never raising his voice. He paints every day, a man of routine whose regularity proves reassuring.

Everyone knows he has returned from the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, but in Auvers, nothing in his behaviour causes alarm.

Vincent pushes open the door to the common room. Arthur Ravoux arranges chairs around the oak tables. The forty-one-year-old innkeeper, a former butcher turned manager since 1889, greets his tenant with a nod.

A respectful relationship between two men who understand each other without many words. “Coffee, Monsieur Vincent?” “Gladly.”

Through the window panes, Vincent glimpses the Place de la Mairie awakening. A cat crosses the street. Shutters open one by one. Auvers emerges from the night. He settles at his usual table.

The staircase creaks. Anton Hirschig descends in turn. This twenty-three-year-old Dutch painter has been sharing the lodgings for several weeks. He greets Vincent in Dutch. Vincent looks up, responds in their common tongue. Their exchanges often remain limited to these morning pleasantries. Hirschig takes another table.

Madame Ravoux brings breakfast. Bread, butter, jam. Vincent eats without appetite. His thoughts drift towards that stormy conversation he had with Theo during his visit to Paris on 6th July last.

His younger brother, aged thirty-three, employed at the Boussod Valadon gallery on boulevard Montmartre, has been supporting him financially for years.

One hundred and fifty francs a month sent religiously. A generosity that allows Vincent to dedicate himself to his art.

But Theo’s burdens have grown heavier since his marriage to Johanna Bonger in April 1889. A son was born in January, little Vincent Willem whom Vincent cherishes. These new family responsibilities worry the painter.

During that last Parisian visit, he discovered his brother’s mounting financial difficulties. This reality distresses him. He feels himself a burden to this brother who has already given so much.

Vincent finishes his meal quickly. In his room, he gathers brushes with worn bristles, nearly empty tubes of paint, his stained palette. These colours he often buys from old Tanguy, that good merchant on rue Clauzel who extends credit to artists.

Julien Tanguy, sixty-five years old, believes in his talent when all Paris ignores it.

Vincent loads his portable easel, descends again with his paint box. Arthur Ravoux and Adeline exchange a surprised look. In the two months he has lodged here, Vincent never leaves before nine o’clock.

Vincent takes the rue Daubigny. This path he knows well. It is the one he regularly takes to visit Doctor Paul Gachet. This sixty-two-year-old physician, a specialist in melancholy, was meant to watch over his fragile mental health.

Recommended by the painter Pissarro, Gachet knows about nervous disorders. In reality, their relationship is primarily friendly. Gachet appreciates art, paints in his spare time, possesses a fine collection. Vincent painted his portrait in June, a pensive face resting on the hand, melancholic gaze.

Vincent sets himself up facing the embankment where tangled tree roots grow. He mounts his easel, takes out his canvas. This complex motif has attracted him since yesterday. These tortuous roots, laid bare by erosion, form a chaotic network. He begins to paint, applying the colour directly from the tube.

Minutes pass. Vincent traces, erases, begins again. The forms do not obey him. His hand hesitates. He senses that nothing will ever change. All these canvases painted in general indifference, this work that nobody understands.

What is the point of continuing? He had nevertheless maintained hope for recognition, however modest, for so long. Just a few benevolent glances cast upon his work.

He recalls that phrase he had written to his brother: “One day or another, I believe I shall find a way to mount an exhibition of my own in a café.” A humble ambition. He asked no more than that. But even this seems impossible.

In Arles, children pursued him shouting, pointing fingers at him. His canvases disturb, unsettle. Only Theo and a few rare friends like Gachet or Tanguy understand his painting. The world remains closed to him.

At the inn, midday strikes. Arthur Ravoux consults the clock. Monsieur Vincent, always punctual for meals since his arrival at the end of May, is conspicuously absent. “Has Monsieur Vincent told you anything today?” he asks Adeline. “No, Papa. Everything seemed normal this morning, apart from his leaving earlier.”

Adeline steps out into the street, looks into the distance. No figure in sight. The July sun beats down. Vincent has perhaps sought shade elsewhere.

Vincent continues his painting. The forms elude him. He sets down his brush, studies his canvas. Dissatisfaction overtakes him. The impression of going in circles, of no longer advancing.

Towards five o’clock, Vincent packs away his equipment abruptly. His canvas remains unfinished. He heads towards the heights of the village with purposeful stride. The path climbs behind the dilapidated château that dominates Auvers. Up there stretch the wheat fields belonging to Monsieur Gosselin, an absent Parisian landowner.

Vincent climbs the slope beneath the burning sun. More than half a kilometre’s walk through rural paths. The ripe wheat ripples in the wind, dotted with poppies. He crosses through the golden ears, plunges into the heart of this vegetal sea that isolates him from the world.

Eighteen twenty. Vincent stops in the middle of the field. He takes a revolver from his pocket, a weapon he has owned only recently. The metal gleams in the sunlight. His hand trembles. A second’s hesitation.

You may have already held it in your hand: the Italian 10 cent coin, the one whose national side shows a woman with long, loose hair.

That face belongs to Botticelli's Venus. The Birth of Venus may be the single painting that best sums up the Italian Renaissance, the one that draws a crowd every single day at the Uffizi in Florence.

To just about everyone, that face is Venus, the goddess of love. And yet almost no one knows the real story behind this painting.

Let's look at it detail by detail.

The Foam

Start at the very bottom, with the sea, where a thin edge of white foam runs along the waves. For the Greeks, Venus's story begins right there, in that foam, and the oldest account we have comes from Hesiod, a poet who wrote down the origin of the gods in the 7th century BCE.

In the beginning, Uranus, the sky, rules over everything. His son Cronus, a Titan, a god of the very first generation, takes a sickle and castrates him, then throws the severed flesh into the sea.

White foam forms around the flesh as it falls into the waves, and out of that foam steps a young woman. The Greeks call her Aphrodite, from aphros, their word for foam, and the Romans call her Venus.

The waves then carry her to Cyprus, an island at the eastern edge of the Mediterranean.

This goddess is never a child: she emerges from the foam already a grown woman. Botticelli chose that exact moment: Venus newly born, standing on the waves, her foot about to touch land.

The title wasn't his. The Birth of Venus is the name the painting received long after his death.

The Shell

Raise your eyes a little. Venus stands on a ridged shell, a scallop shell, but an impossibly large one: in the Mediterranean, you can hold one in the palm of your hand, and this one is carrying a grown woman.

For the ancients, the symbol was obvious: that shape evokes a woman's sex organ, and with it fertility and love.

Yet no Greek text about the birth of Venus mentions a shell at all.

After Hesiod, the other major account of this birth is a hymn, a song in praise of the goddess, which the Greeks believed was written by Homer, the author of the Iliad. In the hymn, as in Hesiod, only the waves and the foam carry the goddess to shore.

Botticelli sets her down on a shell instead. Remember this choice of his.

The Hands

On the shell stands the goddess, and the first thing to notice is her hands: the right rests on her chest, the left draws a long lock of hair across her groin.

This pose has a name, the Venus pudica, the modest Venus, the one who covers herself, and it comes from Greek statuary. Around 350 BCE, the sculptor Praxiteles carved the first major statue of a fully nude goddess.

It was made for Cnidus, a city on the coast of what is now Turkey, and travelers crossed the sea just to see it; legend even tells of a young man who fell in love with it.

Sculptors after him give all their nude Venuses this same gesture with both hands, and Botticelli keeps the pose.

But he gives it to a young woman, and a desirable one: a long, supple body, pale skin, her head tilted slightly. That modesty then works against her, and the hands draw the eye to exactly what they are covering.

In Italy at the time, painting almost always told stories from the Bible or the lives of the saints. Since antiquity, nobody had painted a nude woman, close to life size, alone at the center of a large canvas, with no biblical story to give her a reason to be there.

The Hair

Move up to the hair, long and blond, lifted by the wind, and lean in closer: fine bright threads glint among the strands. That is real gold, laid down stroke by stroke with a brush.

In the Iliad, Homer calls her "golden Aphrodite." On the canvas she wears no jewelry at all, no necklace, no bracelet, no earrings: every bit of Botticelli's gold went into her hair.

The Winds

That hair streams to the right, and the wind lifting it is blowing in from the left. Turn that way: two winged figures fly there, pressed close together in a swirl of drapery.

The man, his cheeks puffed out, is blowing on Venus. This is Zephyr, the west wind, the one who, for the Greeks, brings back spring and makes the earth bloom again, and in the hymn it is his breath, his alone, that pushes the goddess all the way to Cyprus.

Look more closely, though: wrapped around him, a winged woman is blowing too, more gently: a mere breeze.

Botticelli drew this pair from an ancient cameo, a carved gemstone showing winds in flight, and that cameo belonged to Lorenzo de' Medici, known as the Magnificent, a great collector of antiquities. The Medici are the bankers who govern Florence, and Lorenzo is the head of the family.

One breath in the hymn; two on the canvas, wrapped around each other. Remember this second wind, too.

The Roses

The breath of the two winds carries flowers, roses that fall like rain toward the sea, between them and the goddess.

Another Greek text, much later, one that celebrates the rose rather than the goddess, tells how on the day Venus rose from the waves, the earth brings forth a flower that has never existed before: the rose. These are also the flowers of spring, the ones Zephyr brings back with him every year.

The Shore

The roses fall to the right; follow them to dry land. A grove of dark trees lines the shore, gold flecks on their leaves and, among the leaves, small white blossoms: orange trees.

In Italian, Medici means doctors. Florentines liked to play on the word: they called the orange mala medica, the medicinal apple, and the orange tree came to be seen as the Medici family's tree.

Venus lands on the shore of Cyprus, and that shore is planted with trees that belong to Lorenzo's family. We'll come back to it.

The Woman with the Cloak

Beneath the orange trees, a barefoot young woman, her body leaning forward, steps toward Venus. She holds out a large pink cloak, filled by the wind like a sail, and she is ready to wrap it around the goddess, who arrives wearing nothing at all.

The Greek hymn tells this same scene. When Venus reaches land, women are waiting on the beach to dress her: the Hours. For the Greeks, these are goddesses, sisters who each bring back a season in turn, and their name has nothing to do with the time of day.

In the hymn there are several of them, and they cover Venus in gold: gold bands across their own foreheads, and for the goddess, divine garments, a gold crown, jewels at her ears, gold necklaces around her throat.

On the canvas there is only one woman, and not a fleck of gold: cornflowers on her white dress, roses at her waist, wildflowers scattered across the cloak she holds out.

Botticelli kept the scene from the hymn, the shore, the cloak, the welcome, but not the goddesses. And the hymn has no name for the young woman covered in flowers who takes their place.

The Face

A shell, two winds, a shore lined with orange trees, a woman covered in flowers: none of this exists in the Greek texts. Now look at Venus's face, then at the face of the woman holding out the cloak: they are the same.

This painting does not celebrate the goddess Venus. It celebrates a woman..

One evening in January 1942, on the top floor of a building on Washington Square in New York, a woman of 58 has been posing since early afternoon.

She sits on a stool, one elbow on a small table that has been pushed against the wall. One hand raised in front of her face, eyes lowered to her own fingers: the posture of a customer at a bar.

Six feet away, a man paints standing up, a palette in his left hand.

On his canvas, an all-night diner occupies the corner of a deserted street, seen from the opposite sidewalk, through a window that runs the full width of the picture. Two men in hats lean on the counter. A counterman bends behind it.

A little farther along the counter, a red-haired woman in a red dress is waiting for her face to exist. For now it is only a pale patch, and that face is what she is posing for.

She talks. She has always talked during sittings, she can't help it: how far along is he, is it coming, how much longer.

Across from her, nothing. Not a word, not a look, not even a movement of the hand that holds the brush.

So she tells him, without raising her voice: talking to him is like dropping a stone down a well. You wait for the splash, and it never comes.

Then she climbs down from the stool to go look at that face. Between her and the easel, in the middle of the floorboards, a stripe of paint crosses the studio from one wall to the other. She steps over it without slowing.

He sets down his brush and slaps her.

She rakes his cheek with her nails until it bleeds. They grapple standing up, between the easel and the small table, he holding her by both arms, she twisting free and biting.

He is a head and a half taller than she is. He is 59. She is 58.

The session ends there. Neither of them goes back to their place, she to the stool, he to the canvas. This apartment has seen dozens of evenings like this one over the past few years.

What remains is the stripe of paint on the floor. He painted it himself, and it divides the studio into two territories.

On his side, everything used for painting: the easel, the paints, the canvases stacked facing the wall. On the other side, everything else, and her.

The rules that go with this border are his, and there are three.

She does not cross the stripe. She does not touch his paints. And when visitors climb up to see his canvases, she does not show them hers.

Her name is Josephine Nivison, Jo to everyone, and for 17 years she has been Edward Hopper's wife.

A painter, too.

A painter before he was.

Artist, Illustrator

Their story begins long before this stripe of paint, in a New York art school where they study under the same teacher.

Two students the same age, in the same room, drawing from the model and from the street. She arrives with a degree from Hunter College. When she finishes school, she chooses watercolor, while he tries to sell his canvases and fails.

Her career is written on gallery walls. Her watercolors go into New York's group shows, alongside Man Ray and Stuart Davis, two names that already mean something.

She teaches drawing in the city's public schools and sells drawings to the newspapers. She also acts with a Greenwich Village theater company for several seasons.

In the New York City directory, under "occupation," she lists a single word: artist. She exhibits regularly. She makes a living at it.

He lives on commercial work. Covers and advertisements for trade magazines, from the movie business to wholesaling. The same directory, in the same column, files him under illustrator.

He paints in the evenings and on Sundays, and nobody buys. His last sale, for $250, is ten years behind him.

One summer, they cross paths again in Gloucester, Massachusetts. They work outdoors, side by side.

She in watercolor, which has always been her medium. He in watercolor too, because she has brought him back to it.

He has not done one in years. She pushes him and corrects him over his shoulder. From that summer he brings back a big wooden house with a mansard roof.

In the fall, in New York, the Brooklyn Museum is preparing a show of watercolorists and invites her. She brings her watercolors, and 6 of his with them, and gets the museum to hang those 6 in the same room as her own.

The museum buys one, the house with the mansard roof, for $100. It is the first picture Edward Hopper has sold in ten years. From Jo, the museum buys nothing.

One Condition

The following summer, on July 9, 1924, they marry in Manhattan, in a small church, with a painter friend as their witness. They are both 41.

She sets one condition on the marriage, only one: he will never again paint any woman but her. He agrees, and he keeps his word.

From that day on, every woman who appears on one of his canvases has Jo's face and Jo's body. The movie usherette, the secretary, the naked woman standing at her window, every one of them is her.

Three months after the wedding, a Fifth Avenue dealer hangs 11 of his watercolors, in the same vein as the Gloucester ones, and sells every one. The dealer takes him on. Hopper gives up magazine covers and from then on lives on nothing but his painting.

Jo's days change with his. She opens big bound ledgers and records every canvas he finishes: the date, the title, the price, the buyer's name. The letters from the dealer, the collectors, and the journalists pass through her hands.

She negotiates loans to exhibitions and keeps the household accounts. Whenever he needs a woman on a canvas, she climbs onto the stool. What is left of the day goes to her own painting.

Hopper does not look at that work, and he says nothing about it.

A painter friend of Jo's has a show in New York. Hopper goes, makes the rounds of the room, and lets drop that it is good. Jo passes it on to her friend in writing:

"E. Hopper, who is against all women's work on principle, was honest enough to say he liked your show."

Twice a Year

Six years pass in the Washington Square apartment.

Jo has no dealer, and without a dealer, in New York, only one door is left: the group shows. You drop off your canvases, a jury of established painters picks the ones that will go on the wall, and the rest go home to whoever painted them. She submits twice a year.

When a canvas is taken, she goes to see it hang in empty rooms. Very little sells. No dealer comes looking for her, and no gallery offers her a show of her own.

During those same years, he sells a canvas for $1,500 at his dealer's, a record for him, and buys a used car with the money. He does the driving. He never lets her take the wheel, and the day she talks about getting her license, he refuses.

One evening, in the studio, she asks him: isn't it nice, though, to have a wife who paints?

"It stinks."

Then the Whitney opens its doors in New York. It is a brand-new museum, given over entirely to American art, and for its opening show it buys a Hopper, a row of shops shuttered on a Sunday morning. That year he sells 30 canvases, and other museums follow.

The organizers of New York's group shows, the same ones Jo has been submitting to for six years, now want Hopper on their juries. The seat brings nothing but a little prestige and a day on a chair, watching several hundred canvases go by. He accepts, and they ask him back.

On a jury day, in a gallery closed to the public for the occasion, chairs are set in a half-circle around an empty easel. Four or five painters sit in them, the catalogue of entries open on their laps.

Two men in smocks shuttle back and forth from the storeroom. One canvas per trip: they set it on the easel, wait, take it down, and go back for another.

Each canvas gets a minute, a word, sometimes two. Hands go up or stay down, and the canvas goes onto one of two piles, the one that will be hung and the one that will be sent back.

A harbor under snow: not a hand goes up. A still life with pears: two hands, not enough. Hopper says little and votes fast, and the shuttle from the storeroom goes on.

The two men set the next canvas on the easel. A small, pale canvas: a basket of fruit on a table, reds and a lemon yellow.

Hopper recognizes the hand before he reads the signature in the corner. It is a painting by Jo.

He knows what his vote can do to her career.

If you’ve ever been to the National Gallery in London, you’ve seen it happen. A small crowd, five or six people huddled in front of a not-very-large painting, phones raised, trying to capture the reflection in a tiny convex mirror.

The painting is 82 by 60 centimeters. It dates from 1434. And it is probably the most clue-packed painting in the entire history of Western art.

This is the Arnolfini Portrait, painted by Jan van Eyck. Van Eyck was the personal painter of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, the most powerful man in Europe at the time.

An artist so respected that when his treasurers once forgot to pay him, the Duke sent them a furious letter saying he would never find another painter this good.

He was also entrusted with secret diplomatic missions. He was as much a spy as he was a painter. (I tell his incredible story here.)

And in this painting, he hid clues everywhere. Let’s look at them one by one.

The oranges

Let’s start with a detail most visitors don’t even notice. On the windowsill and on the chest below it, there are oranges. Three, maybe four.

It looks unremarkable. It’s anything but.

This is Bruges, 1434, northern Europe. Oranges come from the Iberian Peninsula, by ship. They cost an absolute fortune. Placing oranges in plain sight in a portrait sends a very clear message: we can afford this.

Bruges is the commercial capital of Europe at this point. Italian, Spanish, and Hanseatic merchants all cross paths here. The Arnolfini are silk traders from Lucca, Italy, who supply the court of the Duke of Burgundy directly.

Every object in this room says something about their wealth. The oranges are the first clue. The carpet on the floor is another: it’s an Oriental rug with geometric Anatolian patterns. In Bruges, a rug like this was so precious that people placed them on tables, not on the ground. Here, it’s being walked on.

But the oranges also carry a religious meaning. In Flemish painting, the orange often replaces the apple of original sin. They evoke the Garden of Eden. The Fall. Here, they sit in the light from the window, and if you look very, very closely, you can see that Van Eyck painted their reflection in the polished wood.

The shoes

In the foreground, a pair of wooden pattens tossed on the floor. These are the man’s street shoes, still caked with mud from the roads. The woman’s red shoes are placed further back, near the bed.

They are both barefoot indoors.

In the Bible, when God speaks to Moses at the burning bush, he says: “Remove your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” It’s a reference any fifteenth-century viewer would have understood immediately. Whatever is happening in this room is sacred. This is consecrated ground.

The rosary

To the left of the mirror, hanging from a nail in the wall, is a rosary made of amber beads. In Flanders, this was a traditional engagement gift.

But what’s extraordinary is the way Van Eyck painted it. Light enters through the window, catches the upper left edge of each bead as a bright white dot, passes through the translucent amber, and comes out the other side as a small orange crescent.

Each bead works like a tiny lens. On top of that, Van Eyck painted the shadow of the cord on the wall and the reflections the beads cast onto the plaster.

These beads are a few millimeters across in the actual painting. He probably worked with a single-hair brush.

The green dress (and no, she’s not pregnant)

The woman wears a voluminous green dress lined with white ermine. The amount of fabric is enormous. This type of dyed wool could cost more than silk. Green symbolizes fertility and hope.

And yes, she looks pregnant. People have believed it for centuries. A Spanish inventory from 1700 actually describes the painting as “a pregnant German woman in green.”

Except she’s not. The protruding belly is simply the fashion of the time. Every elegant woman in the fifteenth century is depicted this way. The dress is so heavy it has to be gathered up in front to walk, which naturally creates this rounded silhouette.

In the Ghent Altarpiece, Van Eyck’s great masterpiece, he paints Eve completely naked with exactly the same belly. It’s a beauty standard, not a pregnancy.

The mirror

This is the center of the painting. Literally. Van Eyck placed it exactly between the two figures, at the central point of the composition.

It’s a convex mirror, curved outward. In its distorted reflection, you can see the entire room in reverse, the backs of the couple, and two small figures stepping through the doorway. One in red, one in blue.

The figure in red is almost certainly Van Eyck himself. He’s recognizable by the red chaperon he wears in his self-portrait from 1433. The painter placed himself inside his own painting, in a reflection, two centuries before Velázquez did the same thing in Las Meninas.

But the truly mind-blowing part is the frame of the mirror. It’s decorated with ten tiny medallions. Each one measures just a few millimeters in the actual painting. And each one depicts a scene from the Passion of Christ, from the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane through to the Resurrection.

The figures inside them are identifiable. Van Eyck probably used a magnifying glass to paint them.

And the scenes are not arranged randomly. All the ones before Christ’s death are on the man’s side. All the ones showing the death, the entombment, and the resurrection are on the woman’s side.

Keep that in mind.

The chandelier and the candle

On the ceiling, a brass chandelier with six branches. Six spots for candles, but only one is lit.

It’s above the man.

Above the woman: nothing. Just melted wax, still dripping, where a candle once burned.

Candle lit, candle out. Alive, dead? Hold that thought too.

The signature

Just above the mirror, Van Eyck wrote on the wall in very careful Gothic lettering: “Johannes de eyck fuit hic 1434.” Jan van Eyck was here, 1434.

Normally, when a painter signs a painting, they write “made this” or “painted this.” Van Eyck wrote “was here.” He doesn’t claim to have created this image. He says he was present. Like a witness. Like a notary signing a legal document.

And the lettering itself imitates the calligraphy used in legal documents of the time. It’s the only time in his entire career that he placed his signature directly on the painted surface.

Some say Modigliani once murmured this line to one of his models: "When I know your soul, I will paint your eyes."

No one ever heard it. Yet it has traveled for a century now, from biography to biography, all the way onto museum labels, with the quiet confidence of a fact that has never needed checking. Who first repeated it, in what room, in what year, nobody knows.

It is easy to see why the line caught on. In his fourteen years in Paris, the Italian prodigy of the School of Paris, the circle of foreign artists then working in the city, stretches faces, lengthens necks, erases gazes, and builds a style recognizable from across a room.

A line about the soul settles the matter of those empty eyes in ten words, with nothing left to puzzle out, and that is exactly what makes it suspect.

So why did Modigliani paint eyes without pupils?

A Bed of Mattresses

Livorno, Italy, July 12, 1884.

Eugénie Modigliani is in labor, and the contractions are coming faster. The whole house already knows the child will be a boy, and that his name will be Amedeo.

That same day, a bailiff walks through the door. The father's bankruptcy has swallowed up everything, and the man has come to take what is left, the furniture, any object still worth reselling.

An Italian law ties his hands on one point: nothing can be seized from the bed of a woman giving birth. The family immediately sees what can be made of it.

They rush into the room, pile everything of value onto Eugénie's bed, throw mattresses on top, and the bailiff waits in the next room, unable to do a thing about it.

That is how, on this bed turned hiding place, between his mother's cries and the bailiff's footsteps behind the door, Amedeo Modigliani comes into the world.

Childhood brings him to the edge of the grave more than once. First pleurisy, then typhoid fever, then a second bout of pleurisy that leaves behind tuberculosis of the lungs.

He is sent off to breathe milder air, to Naples, to Capri, to Amalfi, to Rome, and between bouts of convalescence he studies painting in Florence, then in Venice, where an uncle pays for his enrollment at the Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1906, his mother agrees to pay for his departure. Destination: Paris.

There he conceals the illness that has already nearly killed him, and he paints. Year after year, one detail shifts across his canvases without anyone noticing at first: the eyes of his models lose their pupils, one by one.

In Montparnasse, people know about his rages, his nights, the drinking, the hashish people claim he uses. The poet André Salmon will go so far as to claim that a sober Modigliani is worth no more than an ordinary painter, and that his light comes to him only through debauchery.

For many, this emptiness in the gaze only confirms what the whole neighborhood believes it already knows. They read it as alcohol, nerves, a mind coming apart and finally spilling onto the canvas, the painted proof of a man destroying himself.

His fellow painters think highly of him. The market, meanwhile, ignores him just as steadily: not a single sale, not one exhibition that matters.

At the Académie Colarossi, a Paris art school where he comes to draw, he meets a student of nineteen, Jeanne Hébuterne. She is shy, reserved, the exact opposite of the reputation trailing behind him, that of a penniless seducer.

They fall in love almost at once. Jeanne's family wants nothing to do with this Italian painter, Jewish and penniless, and the couple settles into a poverty that keeps them on the margins of almost everything.

He paints her, again and again. In almost all these canvases, Jeanne has no pupils.

The following year, Jeanne gives birth to a daughter. They name her Jeanne too.

The Sixth Floor

A year later, in January 1920, Modigliani has not left his bed in two days. Through the apartment wall, a neighbor hears him talking with people who are not in the room.

She finally pushes open the door and finds him half conscious, unable to stand. He is carried to the Charité, a Paris hospital.

He dies on January 24, 1920. The illness he has hidden since adolescence has finally taken him.

His friends give him an immense funeral, and the whole young crowd from the studios of Montparnasse follows the procession to Père Lachaise cemetery.

Jeanne does not walk behind the coffin. She waits at her parents' home, eight months pregnant with their second child, and around her everyone works to keep the news from her, because no one dares be the one to tell her.

Nothing works. She eventually finds out. The next morning, she jumps from the sixth floor.

Her Catholic parents refuse to let her rest beside him, and for ten years the two graves remain separate.

In 1930, the couple is finally reunited at Père Lachaise, under two epitaphs that echo each other, stone to stone.

"Struck down by death at the moment of glory."

"Devoted companion to the ultimate sacrifice."

Les Montparnos

During his lifetime, the Paris press ignored Modigliani. It named him only once, in 1917, and it was to tear him down.

His death, followed the next day by Jeanne's, changes everything. Those who never bothered to put a single word about him on paper now pick up their pens.

Among them, Michel Georges Michel, a chronicler of Montparnasse nightlife, who publishes "Les Montparnos" in 1924, a novel drawn from the bohemian world he has shared tables with for years.

In it, he places an Italian painter, generous, undisciplined, dead young for his art. The character matches, point for point, the couple Modigliani and Jeanne have just formed without meaning to.

Other witnesses, without coordinating, reshape their memories the same way, and the undisciplined young painter they once knew becomes, in their telling, a genius sacrificed to his art.

It is in this climate that the line begins to circulate.

"When I know your soul, I will paint your eyes."

No one knows who first said it, or to whom, and no document allows it to be dated.

It fits, exactly, the shape of the character the novel has just created, a tormented genius who paints what he feels.

26 Portraits

If the line is true, it speaks of intimacy. It should then apply first to the woman Modigliani loved most, the one who stays until the end and follows him into the grave: Jeanne.

He paints her 26 times in three years. Of those 26 portraits, only four keep their pupils.

In one of these portraits with empty eyes, beneath the final layer of paint, the outline of the irises can still be made out, drawn with a light stroke. He had begun them. Then he painted over them with pale blue, with his own hand, in the same motion, and left the eyes empty.

If the gaze were earned by coming to know someone, she, of all people, should have kept it every time. The emptiness, then, tracks neither time, nor closeness, nor love.

The explanation lies elsewhere.

It is not the alcohol, whatever Salmon said. It is not the particular psychology of a cursed artist. It is not even love. All that is left, now, is to understand the real reason behind the missing pupils in the Italian painter's work.

November 2025, at the Louvre.

Visitors move through the red galleries of monumental French painting, in the Denon wing. They raise their eyes to The Coronation of Napoleon, then stop in front of Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa.

A little further on, an enormous canvas. Nearly thirteen feet high, more than seventeen feet wide.

A battle out of antiquity. Spears, helmets, bodies.

When they turn around, the visitors find a mirror behind them.

They see the painting in it. And themselves, standing in the middle.

Their reflection puts them inside the battle.

The painting is called The Intervention of the Sabine Women.

That mirror is not there by accident. It is a nod to one of the first great pieces of stagecraft in art history.

A battle out of antiquity, or so it seems. We are going to look at it detail by detail.

The Golden Disk

At the center of the canvas, the eye catches on a huge golden disk, round as a sun.

It is a shield.

Look at the middle of it. A she wolf, standing. Under her belly, two infants nursing.

The two children are Romulus and Remus, twins born to Rhea and the god Mars. Abandoned on the bank of the Tiber, they are taken in by a she wolf who feeds them instead of eating them.

Once grown, they found a city on the hills above the river. Romulus gives it his name. The she wolf becomes its emblem.

Below the wolf, David has written four letters: ROMA.

The wolf and the twins already say Rome. Why spell it out?

That addition means something. Keep them in mind.

And look at who is carrying the shield. A naked man, seen from behind, his arm drawn back, his javelin ready to fly.

That is Romulus. The founder of Rome, its first king, the head of its army.

A Handful of Hay

Move up, above Romulus. A forest of spears and helmets.

At the top of one of the poles, the wolf again, in gilded metal, set on a base shaped like a horn.

On another, a bundle of hay lashed to the pole.

In the dust of a battle, a soldier loses sight of his commander. He follows his standard.

That hay tells the story of how the Roman army began. Its very first soldiers gather behind a handful of dry grass tied to the end of a stick. Their first standard, long before the eagle.

That is where the word maniple comes from: manipulus, “a handful.” One of the basic units of the legion.

On the right side of the painting, the army of Rome. An army so young that its flags are still armfuls of grass.

At the End of the Javelin

Follow the line of Romulus’s javelin, off to the left.

At the end of it, a warrior facing him, half a step back, his shield raised to block the javelin.

That is Titus Tatius, king of the Sabines. Behind him, his army.

The Sabines, a people of the hills, live northeast of Rome, a few hours’ walk away. Their city is called Cures.

Tatius has led their men here.

The Towers

Raise your eyes.

At the very top, a fortress. Ramparts, stone towers. The Capitoline Hill, the hill the Romans hold sacred.

On its walls, small figures are still fighting.

This battle is not being fought in open country. It is being fought inside Rome, at the foot of the citadel.

Look at those towers again. Below, an army marching behind a bundle of hay. Above, cut stone.

In this period, all Rome has on the Capitoline Hill is a modest citadel. Nothing like those towers.

Those ramparts are an anachronism.

A painter who takes that much care over a bundle of hay does not get a citadel wrong.

Almost everyone who walks past the painting misses this. It matters.

The Rock

Just to the right of the Capitoline Hill, a sheer rock face.

That rock has a name: the Tarpeian Rock.

For centuries, this is where the Romans throw their traitors to their deaths.

Above the battle, David has placed the spot where Rome punishes betrayal.

In the Foreground

Lower your eyes to the foreground.

Bodies on the ground. Dropped weapons. A horse down.

Frightened faces. Women screaming, hands raised, pleading. One of them clings to Tatius’s leg.

Children everywhere, thrown into the middle of the fight. At the soldiers’ feet, between the legs of the fighters.

Everything in this corner of the canvas points to a massacre.

One child, though, is not watching the battle.

He is looking at us, straight in the eye.

Remember that gaze.

The Woman in White

Among all these women, one stands out. In white, at the center, arms held out wide in a cross, one hand reaching toward each leader.

Romulus is aiming at Tatius. She is standing between them.

To reach Tatius, the javelin has to go through her.

Her name is Hersilia. She speaks for every woman in the painting.

Around her, other women are stepping into the space where the men are fighting. Their bodies make a wall between the two armies.

Four Words on a Stone

Lower your eyes, between Tatius’s legs. On a stone, four words carved: David fbat anno 1799.

1799, the year he finishes the painting.

When David draws the first sketch for it, he is in prison.

David, the leading neoclassical painter, the greatest artist of his day, is also a relentless revolutionary.

A deputy in the Convention, the assembly that governs France, he votes for the death of King Louis XVI. On the Committee of General Security, the regime’s political police, he sits beside Robespierre, his friend.

A painter, an image maker, but also a politician.

Behind the Spears

In the foreground, everyone sees a massacre.

But look at the background, behind the spears and the weapons.

On the right, behind Romulus, an old Roman commander is putting his sword back in its sheath. In the middle of a battle.

On the left, behind Tatius, a Sabine officer on horseback holds his palm out toward his soldiers.

Further back, soldiers are holding their helmets up at arm’s length.

A blade going back into its sheath, a palm calling for a halt, helmets raised at arm’s length.

Those three gestures hold the key to the painting.

What David is staging has nothing to do with the Romans, or with the Sabines.

Arles, rue du Bout d'Arles, Sunday, December 23, 1888, past eleven at night.

A man walks alone down the street, at a fast clip, a beret jammed down on his head, a bundle under his arm.

On this street, every door is the door of a brothel. He stops at the first one, the licensed house at number 1. He knocks.

A young woman opens. He knows her; she knows him. Her name is Rachel.

He holds out the bundle, a knotted cloth, the way you hold out a gift. She unties it in front of him.

Inside, a piece of an ear. His own, cut off a few hours earlier. She screams, the bundle falls. He says, before he goes:

"Take good care of this object."

He turns on his heel and walks back into the night.

The man's name is Vincent van Gogh.

A few hours earlier, in the Yellow House on place Lamartine, the square where he lives, he quarrels with Paul Gauguin, who has been living with him for two months.

For weeks, everything between them, painting and daily life alike, has turned into a fight. Gauguin is talking about going back to Paris. Tonight, voices rise fast.

Vincent comes at him with an open razor in his hand. Gauguin backs away, gets out, flees down the street. Alone in the house, Vincent turns the blade on himself and cuts off his ear.

From the rue du Bout d'Arles he goes home to the Yellow House. The next morning the police find him in his bed, barely alive. He is rushed to the Hôtel-Dieu, the town hospital.

A Certificate, a Letter

A week passes. Vincent is still at the Hôtel-Dieu, in a common ward, his ear under a bandage. A pastor from the town, Frédéric Salles, comes to see him.

The mayor of Arles is waiting for a certificate. Dr. Urpar, the hospital's chief physician, writes it. He asks that his patient be transferred to a special asylum. To say what the patient suffers from, he writes two words: mental alienation, the law's term for insanity.

One evening, Dr. Félix Rey, the intern, 23 years old, sits down to write a letter of his own. In Paris, Theo, Vincent's brother, is waiting for news. He has written to Rey to ask what there is to fear.

Rey tells him what he has seen. Two days ago, Vincent climbed into another patient's bed and refused to get out.

Then he chased the night nurse, in his nightshirt. Yesterday, he washed himself in the coal scuttle.

What is there to fear? Rey gives no firm answer.

"It is very difficult to give a definite answer."

"At present we are treating only his ear, and certainly not his mental state."

On January 7, Vincent gathers up a few canvases and his painting kit. He leaves the Hôtel-Dieu. No diagnosis has been reached.

30 Signatures

A month later, Vincent is living alone again in the Yellow House.

Thérèse Balmoissière keeps house for him. For three days, he has believed himself poisoned. Everywhere he looks he sees poisoners, and people who have been poisoned.

Thérèse is worried, and says so. The neighbors take the matter to the chief police commissioner of Arles, d'Ornano, who orders a medical examination.

On that order, a third doctor, Dr. Albert Delon, calls at the Yellow House. He examines Vincent and gets him talking.

Vincent recognizes the people around him only now and then. He hears voices that reproach him.

The same day, Pastor Salles writes to Theo.

"Today, according to what the housekeeper told me, he refused to take the slightest nourishment."

At the end of February, a sheet of paper goes from shop to shop around place Lamartine. Crévoulin, the grocer, signs first. Some 30 neighbors sign after him.

It is a petition. It speaks of "excesses of drink, after which he finds himself in such a state of overexcitement that he no longer knows what he is doing or what he is saying."

It demands the confinement of "vood (vincent), landscape painter, Dutch subject." The name is mangled.

Commissioner d'Ornano opens an inquiry and takes statements from the neighbors. Jeanne Corrias, a seamstress on the square, testifies: on Monday, in front of Crévoulin's shop, Vincent grabbed her by the waist and lifted her off the ground.

On March 3, the commissioner closes his inquiry with these words:

"Genuinely afflicted with mental alienation ... has moments of lucidity. He is not yet a danger to public safety, but it is feared he may become one."

The Cell

While the petition is going around place Lamartine, Vincent is already gone. A new attack has brought him back to the Hôtel-Dieu, and this time he has been put in isolation, in the cell they call the cabanon.

On March 19, from that cell, he writes to Theo. His brother has offered to get him out. Vincent refuses.

"I am writing to you in full possession of my faculties ... Do not free me, it will right itself."

A month later, he changes his mind. He himself asks to be admitted to an asylum, and he offers his own explanation.

"If alcohol was indeed one of the great causes of my madness, then it came on very slowly, and it will go away just as slowly."

Theo receives the letter and writes to the director of the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Dr. Théophile Peyron. He negotiates the terms the way you negotiate room and board.

A third-class room, the cheapest tier. The freedom to paint outside the walls. Half a liter of wine with each meal.

The Fourth Doctor

On May 8, on foot, with Pastor Salles at his side, Vincent walks through the gate of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum at Saint-Rémy. No one is forcing him.

He is led down the corridors to his room, a room with bars on the window. A second one, empty, is opened for him to paint in. He spends his first night there.

The next day, Peyron sees him. He is the fourth doctor. He examines him, talks with him, then writes out his admission certificate.

"Acute mania, with hallucinations of sight and hearing."

In the same sentence, he adds a word no certificate has carried before.

"Subject to epileptic attacks, widely spaced apart."

Vincent goes back down and writes to Theo that same day.

"The doctor here is inclined to regard what I have had as an attack of an epileptic nature."

That is all he needs to hear. Peyron, though, has tested nothing. The word epilepsy rests on no examination.

It rests on an admission from Vincent, noted in the asylum register: his aunt, his mother's sister, was epileptic, he says, and there are several cases in his family. No doctor has confirmed this family history.

Four doctors in five months. Mental alienation, a refusal to conclude, a delusion of poisoning, epilepsy. The certificate that carries the most weight hangs on a sentence spoken by the patient about the aunt.

It will take more than 130 years, and the rereading, one by one, of 902 letters, before anyone finally understands what Vincent really suffered from.

You have seen this image somewhere before.

Fans of Attack on Titan, a Japanese manga and anime turned global phenomenon, post it on forums because it looks so much like the man-eating giants of the series.

The same immense body looming over a tiny world. The same panic below.

Yet it hangs in a museum in Madrid: a painting older than any manga.

But do you actually know what you are looking at?

Let's take a look together. You will never see this image the same way again.

The Giant, The Panic, The Storm

A giant has risen behind the mountains. In the valley below, everything is moving: the people, the animals, the carts.

The scene looks like it explains itself. A monster attacks, a crowd flees.

The names this painting has gone by all tell that same story. Goya never gave it a title, so for a century people christened it after what they thought they saw: The Giant, The Panic, The Storm. The name that stuck, The Colossus, came in 1917 from a historian who, by his own admission, had never seen the painting.

What nobody disputes is that it was painted during a war. Napoleon's army occupies Spain, Madrid has risen up, and the crackdown is brutal.

Goya is in his sixties when all of this happens. Fifteen years earlier, an illness left him deaf. Completely deaf: around him the world is silent, the cannons and the screams alike.

From inside that silence, he watches his country burn.

He paints this one for himself. No commission, no buyer, no one to convince. It will never leave his studio in his lifetime.

The Flight, The Donkey, The Fist

When a monster attacks, a crowd runs away from the monster. Here, it scatters in every direction: the people toward one edge of the picture, the bulls toward the other.

In the middle of the stampede, a single creature does not move. A donkey, standing in the chaos as if nothing were happening.

Vienna, late 1917.

At the far end of a bare garden in Hietzing, on the western edge of the city, a studio lamp lights a canvas nearly two meters tall. Outside, night falls early.

In front of the canvas stands a man in a long blue smock. His gray beard grazes the painted surface when he leans in.

Stroke by stroke, he copies a young woman's face onto it.

His name is Gustav Klimt. The richest families in Vienna compete for his portraits, and several of the most prominent women in the city have sat in this studio.

The young woman is not sitting for him. Klimt works from a photograph propped under the lamp. His eyes drop to it, rise to the painted face, drop again.

A mother gave him that photograph.

Her daughter is dead.

Vienna, 1911

Her name was Maria Munk. Everyone called her Ria. She was 24 years old, and she was going to be married.

The daughter of Alexander and Aranka Munk, Viennese industrialists, she lived with her parents in a large house in Währing, on the northwest side of the city.

Her fiancé was Hanns Heinz Ewers, a German writer whose horror stories sold well. He was 16 years older than Ria.

The engagement bound both families. Each side had given its word. Aranka had promised the writer a considerable dowry, plus a generous allowance.

That year, in 1911, Ewers published a new novel. It hit the bookshops in early December. It was called Alraune, the German name for the mandrake, the root that legend says grows in the shape of a man.

Its heroine: a woman born of an experiment, a creature obsessed with sex, who seduced and destroyed every man who came near her, one after another.

She gave the book its name.

The novel caused a scandal. Vienna passed it hand to hand, from the bookshops downtown to the drawing rooms of the wealthy districts.

The novel named no one. Still, the whole city began to see the writer's fiancée in that character. The woman in the book, the Munk girl.

The marriage was not happening. Ewers hesitated. In the end he wanted out completely. The dowry changed nothing.

The break came by mail. A letter addressed to Ria, in handwriting she knew.

In it Ewers ended their engagement. Ria, he wrote, was an incorrigible romantic. A dreamer who mistook life for a novel. And he released her from her promise.

Christmas passed. Then the last days of the year, gray and short.

On December 28, 1911, at noon, in her parents' house, Ria took a revolver and shot herself in the chest, over the heart.

A Posthumous Portrait

A few months later, in 1912, Alexander and Aranka Munk come to Gustav Klimt with a commission: a posthumous portrait of their daughter.

The request is simple. A portrait of Ria, to be made without her, without a single sitting.

A sister of Aranka's makes the connection. Her name is Serena Lederer. She brings Klimt's name to Aranka.

Serena and her husband August own the largest Klimt collection in Vienna. In their apartment his paintings cover the walls, from the drawing room to the bedrooms.

The painter has already painted Serena, and her mother before her. He accepts the Munk commission.

At Aranka's

Klimt goes to work.

He paints Ria lying on a bed of flowers, at peace, like a tragic heroine asleep. A small painting, almost square, tight on the face. Around her, nothing but flowers, dense and colored, out to the edges.

The painting is finished within the year, and Klimt has it wrapped and carries it to Aranka himself, his hat in his hand.

In the drawing room he leans the painting against a wall, undoes the wrapping and steps back to let Aranka take her place in front of it.

She remains standing. A long moment. Without a word.

In front of her, her daughter's face.

Klimt waits, standing too, beside his painting. The silence holds.

Then Aranka asks him to take the painting back, and she leaves the room.

This is not the first refusal of his career. In 1905 the University of Vienna had commissioned large canvases from him for its ceiling; they caused a scandal before they were even installed, and Klimt took them back. But the client then was an institution. This is the first time a private client has refused him.

Klimt wraps the portrait again alone, in the empty drawing room, and goes home with the canvas under his arm.

He goes back to work.

He will paint this face for five years..

Paris, 14th April 1874.

“Auguste, this canvas ruins everything!”

Pissarro points to the still life by Cals, the eldest of the group.

Too large. Badly hung.

Renoir unhooks the gilded frame under his irritated glare.

Monet walks in, approaches the two men.

“What is going on now?” he asks.

“The placement,” Pissarro answers. “Everything has to be redone.”

Pissarro points a finger at three canvases.

“A lottery would have been fairer.”

Renoir sighs, climbs the stepladder.

Since dawn he has been unhooking, nailing, rehanging.

The last man left from the hanging committee.

“We do not have time for this!” he mutters.

Monet smiles, walks to the window.

Pissarro is forty three years old. A man of principle.

The group’s natural leader, a committed socialist, obsessed with equality, he had demanded a lottery for wall space.

A matter of fairness. In Pontoise, where he lives, money is as scarce as commissions.

Through the glass, boulevard des Capucines stretches out under a spring sky.

It was here, a year earlier, in a nearby café, that Monet had run into Félix Nadar by chance.

The photographer, short on money, was looking to rent out his old studio.

The rent: two thousand and twenty francs a month. A fortune.

The neighborhood smells of money, luxury, entertainment.

France is steadying its Republic, still nursing the wounds of the Franco Prussian War.

On the boulevard’s sidewalks, bourgeois in frock coats hurry toward cafés and theaters.

Potential buyers, all of them, who might come and purchase their paintings.

The opening is set for tomorrow, 15th April, at ten in the morning, two weeks before the official Salon, the exhibition that actually matters in Paris.

The date is no accident: catch the press and the public before the Salon swallows them whole.

Elsewhere in Paris, they are hanging Chintreuil’s works at the École des Beaux Arts, the Société des Amis des Arts, the Salon des Alsaciens Lorrains.

Competition will be fierce.

“Where is Claude? Where the hell is he?”

Edmond Renoir, Auguste’s brother, comes barreling down a staircase, a catalog under his arm.

He finally spots Monet by the window, calls out.

“Claude, your number 98. View of Le Havre, it is so ordinary. It needs another title for the catalog. The printer is waiting on the corrections.”

Monet studies his canvas.

Le Havre’s harbor in the morning mist. An orange sun set against a bluish haze.

Shapes barely suggested.

“Put Impression.”

Edmond writes it down, then adds on his own: Sunrise.

He hurries off, pressed for time.

Right up to the end, nothing stayed settled. It took fighting. It took persuading.

The venture, with no jury and no medals, frightens more than a few.

They tried everything to bring their “big brother” on board: Manet, the admired iconoclast.

Eleven years earlier, his Luncheon on the Grass had scandalized the Salon des Refusés, where rejected canvases were shown.

Since then, all of Paris knows his name, and it was exactly that name they wanted beside them.

The painter hesitated, then refused.

The official Salon remained, in his eyes, the real battleground, the only one that mattered.

But he pushed his sister in law, Berthe Morisot, to exhibit with them.

Monet, for his part, convinced his mentor Eugène Boudin.

“How much for the catalog printing?” Pissarro asks.

Monet winces.

“Seven hundred and forty two francs. Alcan Lévy would not give an inch.”

Pissarro whistles. After the rent, the drapery, the lighting: another sizable cost.

Financial necessity is what pushed them to create, on 27th December 1873, the Société Anonyme des artistes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs, an anonymous cooperative of painters, sculptors, and engravers.

Not a manifesto. Not a school. Not a cause. Just the hunt for buyers.

Pissarro chairs the board. He modeled it on the bakers’ cooperative in Pontoise, their guild structure, a collegial setup.

The artists cut out the middlemen, take charge of getting their own work in front of people.

Sixty francs in annual dues per member, a ten percent cut on sales. In exchange, the right to exhibit freely.

Except freedom, for most of them, also means the freedom to starve.

The Vienna crash of 1873 hit the economy hard.

The few collectors who took any interest in these artists have grown more cautious.

Durand Ruel, their dealer, whose gallery once bought their canvases, can barely make ends meet.

The war ruined most of them.

Sisley, thirty four, son of a well off family, has not had a cent to his name since 1870 and has never once been accepted into the Salon.

Pissarro lost one thousand five hundred paintings, looted by the Prussians in Louveciennes.

Monet did show two canvases at the 1865 Salon, even earned some modest praise, but the rejections have piled up since.

In Argenteuil, he skirts poverty. Camille, his wife, mends threadbare clothes.

Renoir scrapes by on commissioned portraits and struggles just to pay for paint.

Guillaumin does not live off his painting at all: he works nights for the Paris roads department, the Ponts et Chaussées, and paints by day.

In a corner, Cézanne, thirty five, stands silent, watching.

Beard poorly trimmed, jacket poorly cut. Never once shown at the Salon.

Rejected, mocked, living off his father’s money, he has brought three canvases, including his provocative Modern Olympia, a raw answer to Manet’s painting.

His father, a banker in Aix, sends him a monthly allowance, without a single word of encouragement.

The two men, Cézanne and Manet, do not much care for each other.

Cézanne, the bear from Provence. An obscure eccentric, backed mostly by Pissarro, who took him under his wing in Auvers and Pontoise.

“Have you seen Édouard today?” Cézanne asks, his voice gravelly.

“Manet is not coming tomorrow,” Monet answers.

He sets a hand on the provincial’s shoulder.

“Despite everything Degas did to talk him into it. He is getting ready for the Salon. The ‘real battleground,’ as he calls it.”

Cézanne shrugs. Such a bourgeois, he thinks.

Five o’clock. Degas, thirty nine, finally arrives.

Monocle screwed into his eye. His temper is impossible. It is also persuasive.

He is the one who talked most of the exhibitors into joining.

The son of a banker, he can afford this kind of independence.

His ten works are already hung. Opera scenes, racetracks, portraits. Not a single landscape.

He has no patience for painting outdoors, that taste for mud and sunlight he cannot understand in Monet or Renoir.

He waves in Bracquemond, an established engraver, who has come to check the hanging of his prints.

Renoir walks past, arms full of frames.

Someone asks what to call this loose, sketch like style they all seem to share.

“Call it the Capucine school,” Renoir jokes, nodding at the address.

Nobody knows it will not stick.

Waiters go over the price of admission one more time.

“One franc,” Renoir’s brother Edmond confirms, checking the printed catalogue.

He wrote it himself, all 165 entries.

Thirty artists in total, most of them unknown outside their own circle.

Night falls over the boulevard.

The gas lamps come on outside.

Inside, the paintings wait in their new frames, still smelling faintly of varnish.

April 15th, 1874.

The doors open at ten in the morning, two weeks before the official Salon.

The timing is deliberate.

Catch the critics before the Salon crowds exhaust them.

One name is missing from the walls.

Frédéric Bazille, one of the founding members, died in the Franco Prussian War four years earlier, at twenty eight.

His parents lend a painting in his memory.

It hangs among the living.

Silence settles back in.

In a few hours, the doors open to the public..

Frida Kahlo paints in bed.

Her mother had an easel made for her, one that leans out over her bed, and a mirror mounted under the canopy so that she always has a model in front of her. She uses a fine brush. Her canvases are small enough to fit in her lap.

In 1939, she gets up.

In her studio in Coyoacán, the neighborhood of Mexico City where she grew up, she puts the biggest canvas of her career on an easel. It is the first time she has worked at this size. She is 32, and the painting is called The Two Fridas.

Two women sit side by side, holding hands. They have the same face.

She gets out of bed for this one, and nothing in it is there for decoration.

Let's look at it detail by detail.

The Background

Start with what is behind the two women.

There is no wall, no horizon, no shadow on the ground. Nothing tells you where the light is coming from. A stormy sky fills the background, and it places the scene nowhere at all.

This is how a retablo is laid out. A retablo is a small votive painting on a sheet of metal, commissioned by a Mexican family from a village craftsman after they survive an accident or an illness.

The craftsman paints the body that was in danger, the saint who answered, and a line of thanks along the bottom. Nothing else. No setting, no depth.

Frida Kahlo has more than 400 of them hanging in her house. She buys them in markets and in country churches.

The Huipil

Let your eye move to the woman on the right.

She is wearing a blue huipil with yellow bands, the short sleeve blouse the women of Tehuantepec wear, along with the long olive skirt and white ruffle that go with it. Those women are called tehuanas.

Tehuantepec is in the south of the country, at the isthmus where Mexico narrows to its thinnest point between the two oceans. The women there run the markets, set the prices and keep the household money. Frida Kahlo's mother is born in the state the isthmus runs through.

Her daughter will dress as a tehuana for her whole adult life.

The High Collar

Now the woman on the left.

A high collar, long sleeves, lace across the chest. The dress is European, the kind a woman wears to her own wedding.

Frida Kahlo's father is Carl Wilhelm Kahlo. He arrives from Germany at 19, becomes Guillermo in Mexico, and makes his living photographing the country's churches for the government.

In 1936 his daughter paints the family tree. Her parents are in it on their wedding day, copied from the wedding photograph that hangs in the house, and her mother is wearing this dress.

Guillermo Kahlo photographs Frida all through her childhood. He photographs himself too, alone, facing the camera.

Look at how the two women are sitting. Square to the front, backs straight, hands flat, eyes still. That is how you hold yourself in front of a camera.

All the Way Down

Look down at the bottom of the painting.

Both skirts run all the way to the floor. You never see a foot.

Polio takes hold when Frida Kahlo is 6 and stunts her right leg and foot. The calf stays thinner, the leg stays shorter, and the other children call her Peg Leg Frida.

She pulls several pairs of socks up over that calf to build it up, has the right shoe fitted with a raised heel, and switches to long dresses for good.

When she paints this canvas, she has been hiding that leg since grade school.

The Bodice

The top of both dresses is wide and stiff, and neither one follows the shape of the body.

Frida Kahlo dresses like this every day. The cut sits over the corsets that hold her spine in place. She goes through 28 of them in her life, in plaster, in leather and in steel, each one strapped on for months before the next is fitted.

What She Is Gripping

Come back to the woman in the white dress, and to the hand lying on her skirt.

That is not a pair of scissors. It is a surgical clamp, the tool a surgeon closes on an artery to stop the bleeding.

Frida Kahlo is 18 when a streetcar hits the bus she is riding home. An iron bar goes through her pelvis. Her spine breaks in three places. Her collarbone breaks, her ribs break, and her right leg breaks in 11 places.

She comes out of that bus with a body that will be opened 32 times, and the clamp is waiting on the tray every single time.

Remember it. We will come back to it.

The Hearts

Both women are cut open above the breast, and the hearts sit outside their bodies, on top of the cloth.

A heart painted outside the body runs all through Mexican imagery. In Mexican homes you find the Sagrado Corazón, the Sacred Heart of Christ, displayed on his own chest for all to see.

The image goes back much further. Before the Spanish arrived, Aztec priests used a flint blade to open the chests of those they sacrificed at the top of the pyramids, and lifted the heart toward the sun while it was still beating.

The way it is drawn, though, owes nothing to devotion. Ventricles, atria, the great vessels, each one in its place, exactly as they appear on an anatomy chart.

Frida Kahlo is 15 when she enters the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, the elite school that feeds into the university in Mexico City. There are 35 girls among nearly 2,000 students. She is going to be a doctor.

Three years later, the streetcar accident ends those studies.

The Arteries

Compare the two organs.

The one on the right is whole. Closed, complete.

The one on the left is open. Cut clean through, the arteries severed, the edges as even as a blade leaves them.

In every image of the Sagrado Corazón the heart stays whole. It is pierced with a lance, ringed with thorns, crowned with flames. It is never cut in two.

Here she cuts one in two.

Follow the vein. It leaves the open heart, crosses the canvas, enters the second heart, and stops in a closed hand.

That hand is gripping an object the size of a coin. That object on its own explains why there are two Fridas.

The Musée d'Orsay, in Paris.

There are the parents who clamp a hand over their children's eyes and quicken their step toward the next room.

There are the visitors who study every other painting in the room and pretend not to see that one.

And there are the ones who stop, four inches from the canvas, and do not move.

In May 2014, an artist in a gold dress entered the room, sat on the floor beneath the painting and reenacted the pose. The guards cleared the room. The museum called the police.

The canvas measures 46 by 55 centimeters. Its frame measures 84 by 99, more than three times its area.

And in front of it, everyone asks the same question.

Who is this woman?

Who could have lain down there, one day in 1866, and let Gustave Courbet paint her like this?

The realist

At 47, Courbet is the most hated painter in France, and that reputation is a point of pride.

Fifteen years earlier, two of his canvases caused a scandal. Men breaking stones at the edge of a road, dirty, faceless. Then a burial in his native village of Ornans. Fifty figures painted at life size, on a canvas of a size previously reserved for battles and sovereigns. Giving peasants that scale was taken as an insult.

People call him the realist, and it is not a compliment.

In 1866, a man climbs the stairs to Courbet's studio.

Khalil Bey is 35. An Ottoman diplomat, he has just settled on the rue Taitbout with a fortune that has all Paris talking. The year before, he bought Ingres's The Turkish Bath.

He commissions two canvases from Courbet. The first, The Sleepers, shows two naked women asleep in each other's arms. The second costs him 19,000 francs, the price of an apartment building.

It is this one.

The woman with copper hair

The previous autumn, Courbet is in Trouville. He spends two months there, in a rented studio at the edge of the beach. Seascapes leave the easel one after another, in between portraits of Parisian ladies on vacation.

An American painter, 31, is staying there too, with his companion. His name is James Whistler, hers is Joanna Hiffernan, and everyone calls her Jo.

She is Irish, born into a family that fled the poverty of Limerick to crowd into Lambeth, in south London. One of her sisters starved to death there at eleven. She is 21 when she meets Whistler, and from then on she never leaves him.

She becomes his model, and much more than his model. She keeps Whistler's books, sells his canvases, negotiates with the dealers in his place.

Courbet writes that autumn: "Of the two thousand ladies who came to my studio, I admired the beauty of a superb redhead whose portrait I have started."

The three become inseparable: they paint side by side on the beach, eat their way through bowls of shrimp cooked in fresh butter, and in the evening Jo sings in Irish.

The portrait begun there is called Jo, the Beautiful Irishwoman. With one hand she holds a mirror, with the other she draws her loosened hair through her fingers.

Courbet will paint four versions of it. One he keeps at home until his death, refusing ever to sell it.

Seven months in Chile

In January 1866, Whistler sails for Valparaiso. Before leaving, he gives Jo power of attorney over all his affairs.

He is gone seven months, and by the time he comes back it is over. She will never pose for him again.

The following year, he writes to the painter Fantin Latour, his closest friend, a letter in which he speaks of Courbet with a violence he shows no one else. "Courbet! and his influence was disgusting! The regret I feel and the rage, hate even, I feel for all that now would astonish you perhaps."

1866 is also the year of The Origin of the World.

And look at the belly in the painting. Some see a woman six months pregnant.

The painter, the model, the year, the breakup, the rage. It all fits.

Except for one thing.

Jo is a redhead.

The pubic hair painted on the canvas in the Musée d'Orsay is dark.

And this is only the beginning.

Madrid, the Prado, Room 52B, ground floor.

A room set apart from the big ones. Most visitors pass through without slowing down, on their way up to the Velázquezes and the Goyas.

Some of them stop short, though. They turn back and step closer.

A seated woman, turned three quarters toward the viewer, one hand resting on the other, a thin veil over her hair. Behind her, rocks and water.

Everyone knows that pose, that smile. They're printed on mugs, tote bags, refrigerator magnets.

But this is not the Louvre. This is Madrid. And she isn't the woman you remember: lighter, more colorful, younger, her features sharper.

A question settles in, and nothing in the room answers it. Where does this painting come from, and who painted it?

By Leonardo's Hand

In 1666, a scribe takes inventory of everything the king of Spain owns in his Madrid palace. The panel is a painting on wood. In front of it, he writes: a woman, by the hand of Leonardo da Vinci.

By the hand of Leonardo. No hedging, no mention of his circle. An original.

The inventories that follow repeat the attribution for nearly two centuries, and its value keeps climbing. The painting follows the royal family from residence to residence, hanging in the king's private apartments.

In 1819, the Prado opens and the royal collections move in. The panel enters the museum as a Leonardo.

The Woman from Florence

If the inventories are right, there is a problem. This same face already has a Leonardo. It hangs in Paris, and it is the most famous painting in the world.

What is known about it fits in a few lines. It depicts Lisa Gherardini, 24 years old in October 1503, married for nine years to Francesco del Giocondo, a silk and cloth merchant who took her as his second wife. That is where the painting's other name comes from: La Gioconda, Giocondo's wife.

That October, a clerk in the Florence city offices notes in the margin of a book that Leonardo da Vinci is working on the head of Lisa del Giocondo. No earlier written record of the painting exists.

Leonardo is 51. The portrait keeps him busy for years. He never delivers it, and no record of payment has ever been found.

The painting follows him from city to city, all the way to France, where Leonardo dies on May 2, 1519.

On one side, the portrait he never parted with. On the other, a second version in the hands of the kings of Spain.

The Wood of the Panel

In the twentieth century, the Prado gradually stops calling it a Leonardo. The name fades from the museum's records, with no announcement and no explanation.

The painting itself stays on the wall, among the Italian masters, between a Raphael, an Andrea del Sarto and Fra Angelico's Annunciation. On the rare occasions it is taken down, visitors write to the museum demanding it be put back.

Then, in 1992, a specialist in old master paintings publishes the explanation that closes the debate. His answer fits in one line: the panel is oak.

Oak is the wood of northern European painters. The Italians of the Renaissance painted on other woods. An oak panel was not painted in Florence.

This painting is a copy, made far from Italy, long afterward, from the finished original. Case closed.

The Letter from Paris

The case stays closed for 18 years. In 2010, a letter arrives from Paris. The Louvre, preparing a major Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, wants to borrow this painting.

Nothing justifies the request. Europe has dozens of old copies of the Mona Lisa, and nobody pays them any attention.

The one in Madrid is considered among the weakest of the lot. The Prado's catalogue does not even give it a serious entry.

And that is the one Paris asks for, without explaining its choice.

One fact sets it apart from all the others, though. The old copies of the Mona Lisa all look like the painting in Paris. The one in Madrid is the only one that does not.

Before a loan, a museum checks the condition of the painting. In June 2011, the panel goes down to the Prado's conservators. It comes out of its frame and onto an easel.

The Prado's wood panel specialist turns it over and examines the back.

The back is not oak. It is walnut. A dense, expensive wood, reserved for painters who could afford it.

The oak theory has just lost the one fact it rested on. Leonardo da Vinci painted The Lady with an Ermine, La Belle Ferronnière and Saint John the Baptist on walnut.

The Paris Mona Lisa, meanwhile, is painted on poplar.

Under the Black Paint

The Prado is left with a panel nobody knows how to classify anymore. Everything starts over.

The painting sitting on the easel in 2011 does not look like the one Room 52B shows today. Behind the woman, no rocks, no water: a sheet of black paint rises all the way to the edge of the frame.

Ana González Mozo, whose job at the Prado is to study what lies beneath the surface of paintings, starts with that abnormal background.

Beneath the black, shapes emerge. Curved lines, climbing. Mountains.

The black does not belong to the painting. Someone laid it down long afterward, over an entire landscape, and no document says who, or why.

The museum decides to remove it. A conservator works through the black layer with cotton and solvent, centimeter by centimeter, for four months. Under each pass of the cotton, a piece of rock, a patch of sky.

The landscape that reappears is the one visitors look at today in Room 52B. And that landscape is the landscape of the Paris Mona Lisa. The same rocks, the same water, in the same places.

An identical backdrop proves nothing by itself. But the Madrid landscape is not finished. The painter laid in the bottom, worked his way up toward the sky, stopped partway and never touched it again.

A copyist does not stop in the middle of a sky. The original in front of him is complete, from the first rock to the last.

The Buried Drawing

The Prado writes to Paris in turn, to request the images the Louvre has made of its Mona Lisa by photographing it under light that penetrates the paint and shows what lies beneath.

Beneath the paint of a picture, a drawing remains. The painter traces his lines, then paints over them and the lines disappear. This light brings them back into view.

On the Paris Mona Lisa, the buried drawing shows Leonardo feeling his way.

Lisa's waist, her belt, first placed lower, then raised. The fingers, drawn in one position, then moved. The outline of the veil is reworked, and so is the outline of the head. The paint has covered them for five centuries.

In Madrid, the two sets of images are placed side by side, the Paris Mona Lisa on one screen, the Prado panel on the other.

Beneath the Madrid paint, the drawing carries the same hesitations. In the same places.

Someone copying a finished painting sees only its surface. Nothing can tell him where Leonardo first placed Lisa's waist.

Then comes the chair. Leonardo drew the right arm of Lisa's chair, the armrest, then gave it up along the way. Beneath the Madrid paint, the same armrest waits, drawn in the same spot, never painted either.

A man painted this panel knowing what the Mona Lisa hides beneath its paint. That fact rules out almost every explanation. One of the last still standing: Leonardo da Vinci painted both Mona Lisas with his own hand.

Every summer, more than a million people cross the German Baltic island of Rügen.

Almost all of them come for the same sight. Tall white cliffs plunging into the sea, the ones a painter made famous two centuries ago.

And all of that tourism started with a single painting.

Its creator is Caspar David Friedrich. He is a star again. In early 2025, the Metropolitan Museum in New York gave him his first major American retrospective. 300,000 visitors in three months.

The painting itself shows three figures at the edge of a precipice, on a summer afternoon. It was painted around 1818, and it now hangs at the Kunst Museum Winterthur, in Switzerland.

Three walkers, a cliff, the sea. An ordinary scene, or so it seems.

We are going to look at it detail by detail.

The Setting

First, where are we.

Rügen sits in the Baltic Sea, off the northern coast of Germany, facing Scandinavia. From its harbors, ferries still leave today for Sweden and Denmark.

The cliffs in the painting are on its northeastern tip, at the Stubbenkammer, already one of the most famous viewpoints in the region in Friedrich's day. The chalk here dates back to the Cretaceous, 70 million years, and the rock face crumbles into the sea without stopping.

Friedrich was born just across the water, in Greifswald, on the mainland. He had known these cliffs since childhood, and he had come to walk them alone, several times.

And yet the landscape he paints does not exist.

No visitor will ever see this view. Friedrich took two different spots on the same coast and combined them on a single canvas, to build a precipice that cannot exist. He moves the rocks, straightens the walls, closes the cliff around his three figures.

This is no accident. Friedrich never paints from life. He walks for whole days along the coasts, stops for hours in front of a tree or a bank of fog, then goes back to the studio and composes, from memory, landscapes that exist nowhere.

His rule fits in a single line: a painter should paint not only what he sees in front of him, but what he sees inside himself.

The Man in the Middle

Look at the man in the middle.

He is bent forward, almost lying on the ground, his body tipped toward the drop. His left hand digs into the earth, his only anchor. His right hand reaches toward a shrub clinging to the very edge of the cliff. Beside him, in the grass, a hat has fallen.

It is the painter. Caspar David Friedrich, 43 years old, a man his friends described as gnawed by a sadness he never explained.

And Friedrich almost never paints himself. His figures are usually seen from behind, faceless, reduced to whatever they are looking at. To find him slipped into one of his own canvases is a rare exception in his entire career.

The Woman in Red

On the left, a little lower down the slope, a second figure.

A young woman kneeling at the edge of the chasm, in a red dress, a white bonnet on her hair. She is shown in three-quarter view, her right hand reaching toward a shrub clinging to the very brink.

Look closely at that shrub. It is almost entirely dry, gray, dead. Except around her head, where a few twigs are coming back to life, right at the level of her face.

Her name is Caroline Bommer, 24 years old, the daughter of a Dresden dyer.

In January 1818, six months before this painting, she married Friedrich in a Dresden chapel, almost in secret. The marriage stunned everyone around him.

Because Friedrich was a hardened bachelor. He lived alone in a bare room at the Dresden Academy, silent, difficult, the kind of man everyone assumed would never marry. At 43, he marries without telling a soul. His friends hear about it from other people.

The Man on the Right

On the right, the third figure.

A young man in a light green coat, leaning against the trunk of a dead tree, his feet on the thin branches clinging to the edge of the cliff. He is looking at the sea.

This is Christian, Caspar David's brother, five years younger. A carpenter, married as well.

Friedrich could have gone on his honeymoon alone with Caroline. He insisted on bringing this brother along.

So the three figures in the painting are the three people closest to the painter at this point in his life, gathered at the edge of the same void.

The Two Sailboats

Follow Christian's gaze. He is not looking at the chasm below his feet, he is looking at the sea. Two sailboats are out there, one fairly close to shore, the other a little farther off.

These sails come back everywhere in Friedrich's work. A boat setting out to sea is, for him, the image of a life leaving for the other shore. He painted dozens of harbors at dusk and ships pulling away from land.

These two sailboats are going to matter.

The Colors

Step back for a moment. Look at nothing but the colors of the three figures.

Caroline's red. Friedrich's blue. Christian's green.

These are not random colors. Since the Christian Middle Ages, they are the colors of the three great virtues. Red for Charity, for love. Blue for Faith. Green for Hope.

Friedrich is a devout Lutheran, close to a pastor from Rügen who preached a simple idea: nature is a place of prayer, and a landscape truly looked at is worth a sermon.

So he dresses his loved ones as virtues. Love on his wife. Faith on himself. Hope on his younger brother.

The Structure

Step back again. Look at the whole canvas.

It holds together in three stacked bands.

At the bottom, green. The grass, the branches, the three walkers. This is the living.

In the middle, white. The chalk dropping straight down, dead rock, fossil, a wall of bone. This is death.

In the distance, blue. Sea and sky blend with no dividing line. This is the infinite.

And the three figures stand exactly on the seam, where the green ends and the white begins. Where the living tips over into death.

It is Friedrich who placed them there, all three, at the exact edge where the living stops.

The Gesture

One detail in this painting is off.

Friedrich spent his life defending one rule: in a landscape, the person matters less than what the person is looking at. That is why his figures face away, anonymous, turned toward the horizon. He wrote it, repeated it, stood by it.

And here he does the exact opposite. He puts himself in the middle, alone, bent to the ground, one hand planted in the earth, the other reaching out over the chasm.

This figure is the key to the whole painting.

One evening in 1918, in a Paris apartment in Montparnasse.

An enormous man has been talking for hours. 31 years old, two hundred and sixty five pounds. Bulging eyes that never leave the man across from him.

He talks about himself. His ancestors, his childhood, what he had lived through, what he had seen.

The stories interlock, precise, full of names, places, entire lines of dialogue. None stumble. None contradict each other.

Night fell long ago. The lamp is lit. He is still talking.

Across from him, Élie Faure listens without a word. An art historian, the most respected art critic in France. His books are teaching all of Europe how to look at a painting.

He listens until the end. He does not challenge anything, does not ask anything.

Then he opens his notebook and writes, at the bottom of the page: this man is a mythomaniac.

The man across from him is named Diego Rivera. He will become the most famous painter in Mexico.

The Walls

Three years later, in the summer of 1921, in Mexico City.

The country is emerging from ten years of civil war. One million dead. The president who had ruled Mexico for thirty years has been driven out.

The war left two names on everyone's lips. In the north, Pancho Villa and his horsemen. In the south, in the state of Morelos, a peasant named Emiliano Zapata, who raised entire villages to take the land back from the big landowners.

Zapata's men rode into battle in sandals, straw hats on their heads, cartridge belts crossed over their chests. The whole country knew their silhouette.

The new regime wants to build a country. Its Minister of Education starts from a simple problem: most Mexicans cannot read.

So their history will be painted on the walls of ministries, schools, and palaces, large enough to be seen in passing. The minister summons the painters and gives them the walls.

Rivera, 34, gets the biggest commissions in the country. In 1923, the entire building of the Ministry of Education.

Three floors of galleries, more than a hundred panels. No one, anywhere in the world, is painting surfaces like these.

He paints the revolution there. Peasants bearing arms, workers, soldiers. And Zapata leading his white horse.

He joins the Communist Party. On the scaffolding, the Party's painters work with pistols at their belts.

Rivera becomes the official painter of the revolution.

The Paint Box

For months, reporters climb up the scaffolding to see him. He answers without coming down, brush in hand. He talks a lot, he talks well, and he talks about himself.

One day in the mid 1920s, one of them wants to know what Rivera had seen in the war.

Rivera sets down his brush and sits on the plank.

"It starts in Orizaba, with the textile workers, when the mills go on strike. I am 19. I put down my brushes and join the strikers."

"The strike turns ugly. The police arrive on horseback. An officer splits my skull open with a saber, right there, at the back of the head, near the neck."

"They throw me in prison with the other strikers. I eat the stale bread the inmates get. The best food of my whole life."

"A few years pass. I show my paintings at my old school, in Mexico City, and the president himself is set to come to the opening. The one who had run the country for thirty years."

"A plot comes together to kill him that day, inside the exhibition walls. With the school's director and an architect. My part is set in advance: bring the explosives into the building, hidden in my paint box, and lock them in a safe at the school."

"When the day comes, the police search everything, the rooms and the guests. They do not search the safe. The president, at the last moment, does not come."

"So I head south. I join Zapata's peasants, in Morelos."

"I become the bomb man. I carry them in my paint box. They were built by an old schoolmate, a man named Penioroja. They are calibrated to destroy only the baggage cars on trains. Not the passenger cars. Baggage only."

"I hold out for six months as an active rebel. Then a friend in high places warns me: they are going to shoot me. They smuggle me out of Mexico City lying flat in the back of a car."

In reality, Diego Rivera was in Paris. He was painting cubist still lifes in Montparnasse, paid every month by the government that had just fallen.

The Lion: Power, Faith, and Danger

The lion is the oldest symbol of raw power in Western art. Christian painters used it for the evangelist Mark and for Christ risen from the tomb. Court painters used it whenever a ruler wanted to look untouchable.

The Wolf: Danger and Devotion

European folklore made the wolf a villain, the beast waiting in the forest for grandmothers and stray children. Roman legend told the opposite story. The she-wolf Lupa nursed the abandoned twins Romulus and Remus, and that image, the wolf as mother, spread across Roman and later Renaissance art.

The Owl: Wisdom, or Its Opposite

Athens is where the wise owl comes from. The bird belonged to the goddess Athena, and its presence marked knowledge and clear judgment across Greek art and coinage.

Painters north of the Alps read the same bird in reverse. In the work of Hieronymus Bosch and other Netherlandish artists, the owl often stands for folly or sin, precisely because it is a creature of the night that cannot bear daylight. The same feathers meant intelligence in Athens and blindness in Bruges.

The Snake: Temptation and Eternity

In Genesis, the serpent talks Eve into eating the forbidden fruit, and Western painters spent centuries illustrating that single moment. The snake became shorthand for temptation itself.

It also meant the opposite. A snake biting its own tail, the ouroboros, stood for eternity and the cycle of time, a symbol older than Christianity that artists kept borrowing. In the Vatican Museums, the marble group Laocoön and His Sons, rediscovered in Rome in 1506, shows serpents sent by the gods to kill a priest who tried to warn Troy. Danger, punishment, and endless time all lived in the same animal.

The Horse: Power and Propaganda

A horse under a ruler has meant status since ancient Rome, where equestrian statues of emperors filled public squares. Painters never stopped using the trick.

Jacques Louis David painted Napoleon Crossing the Alps in 1801, a rearing white stallion under a general pointing toward glory. The real crossing, made in 1800, happened on a mule, led carefully along an icy path. David painted the propaganda Napoleon wanted, not the animal that actually carried him.

The Bird: Freedom and the Soul

Birds carried the lightest symbolism and the heaviest one at once. A dove could mean peace or the Holy Spirit. Any small bird could stand for the soul, free of the body, or for the thin line between life and captivity.

Carel Fabritius painted The Goldfinch in 1654, now in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. The bird sits on top of its feeding box, a thin chain around one leg. It is one of the most famous prisoners in the history of painting, and it never once looks caged.

The Cat: Independence and Scandal

Ancient Egypt worshipped the cat as sacred to the goddess Bastet. Centuries later in Paris, the same animal could still cause a scandal.

Édouard Manet placed a small black cat, arched and hissing, at the foot of the bed in Olympia, shown at the Paris Salon of 1865. Critics already furious at the nude read the cat as one more sign of the woman's independence and her trade. The Musée d'Orsay still displays the painting that broke the rules of the Salon in a single afternoon.

The Butterfly: The Soul in Greek Art

In Greek, the word psyche means both soul and butterfly. Painters and sculptors used that overlap directly, showing the soul leaving the body as a small winged insect rather than a human figure.

A butterfly life is short, which made it a natural fit for vanitas paintings, the still lifes built to remind a viewer that beauty and time both run out. A single wing in the corner of a flower painting was often enough to make the point.

Animals in art, questions people ask

• What animal appears most often in Western painting? No single animal wins across every period, but the lion, the dog, and the horse keep returning, since all three could stand for power, loyalty, or status depending on the scene.

• What does a lion symbolize in art? Power, faith, and danger, depending on the context. In Christian painting it can mean the evangelist Mark or the risen Christ. In court portraits and hunting scenes it usually just means strength.

• Why is the owl linked to wisdom in art? The link comes from ancient Greece, where the owl belonged to Athena, goddess of wisdom. Christian painters in Northern Europe often reversed the meaning later, using the owl for folly instead.

• Are black cats always a symbol of evil in art history? No. In Manet's Olympia the black cat signals independence and sexuality rather than evil, and in ancient Egyptian art the cat was sacred rather than sinister. The purely evil black cat owes more to later folklore than to painting.

• What animal represents the soul in painting? The butterfly, borrowed from the Greek word psyche, which means both soul and butterfly. Birds carry a similar meaning in Christian art, especially the dove.

• What do crows and ravens mean in painting? They carry their own separate history, from medieval omens of death up to Van Gogh's wheatfield. This piece follows the bird century by century, and clears up the myth that the wheatfield painting was his last.

• What do rabbits and hares mean in painting? Depending on the century, the same animal has stood for purity, lust, or resurrection. A closer look at the motif runs from Durer's watercolour to the killer rabbits hiding in medieval manuscript margins.

It may be the most famous painting in the world after the Mona Lisa. People even call it the Mona Lisa of the North.

She is everywhere: rings, tote bags, book covers, posters, refrigerator magnets. On screen, Scarlett Johansson lent the girl her own face. She is also the logo of Cool Stories About Art.

Two questions remain, and nobody answers them. Who is this woman? And did she ever exist at all?

Let's take a look together. You will never see this painting the same way again.

Lot Thirty-Eight

On May 16, 1696, in Amsterdam, the collection of a Delft printer went on the block. Twenty-one paintings by Johannes Vermeer came under the hammer that same day.

Lot thirty-eight was described in a single line: a tronie in antique dress, of uncommon artistry. It sold for 36 guilders.

A tronie, in seventeenth-century Dutch, is a head. No client commissioned it. Nobody sat for it.

A painter made one with no buyer in mind, to sell in the shop and to show anyone passing by what he could do. An unlikely costume, a studied expression, difficult light.

They were turned out in bulk. One of Vermeer's neighbors, a dealer on the Voldersgracht, a street in Delft, had more than seventy in stock the day he died.

Two Guilders and Thirty Cents

Even in his lifetime, Vermeer could not live off his painting. He died in 1675, at forty-three, buried in debt.

Six weeks after his death, his widow handed two of his paintings to the neighborhood baker to settle a bread tab of 617 guilders.

After the 1696 sale, the canvas vanished. One hundred eighty-five years without a trace.

It resurfaced in 1881 in The Hague, at an estate sale on the Nobelstraat, a street in the city. The catalog read: head of a young girl, her head wrapped in a cloth. In the box for the painter: unknown.

The paint was lifting in places, and the grime made it hard to tell what it even was.

A collector carried it off for two guilders plus thirty cents in fees, about thirty euros today. His neighbor had come to the sale with him, and the two men had agreed not to bid against each other.

It was during the cleaning, the following year, that a signature reappeared in the upper left: IVMeer, the letters I, V, and M knotted into a single mark. They are not the first three letters of Vermeer, but the initials of his real name, Johannes van der Meer.

The Painter's Daughter

Vermeer had eleven living children. He lived in his mother-in-law's house in Delft, in the Catholic quarter, a house on the corner of an alley packed with an old woman, a married couple, a maid, and a brood of children.

The eldest was a girl. Her name was Maria.

The idea that Vermeer used his own daughter as a model is an old one. An American art historian devoted an entire book to it, and argues that the same face appears in three canvases.

The painter did not need to go looking for a model. He had one under his roof, free and available.

It all holds together. The house, the period, the absence of a patron.

Except one detail is off. When the painting was made, around 1665, Maria was eleven. And the face looking back at you is not eleven.

Washington, March 8, 1968. At the Shoreham Hotel, a man steps up to the podium with a few pages in his hand, sets them down, and takes a sip of water.

William Gaud runs the United States Agency for International Development. The room is full of economists, agronomists, and civil servants in gray suits. Gaud has come to talk about wheat.

New seed varieties, fertilizer, and pesticides have just turned the Indian and Pakistani harvests around, and the world still has no name for what is happening.

Gaud has found the word. Revolution.

Revolutions come with a color. Red has belonged to the Soviets since 1917, white to the Shah of Iran since 1963.

"I call it the Green Revolution."

That day, green means sacks of fertilizer.

Three years later, the word belongs to someone else.

Vancouver, September 15, 1971. An old trawler casts off with 12 men aboard, headed for Amchitka, an island in the Aleutians. The Americans are preparing an underground nuclear test there, and the crew intends to park the boat directly above the bomb so the Americans cannot set it off.

On deck, one of them raises two fingers in a V, the peace sign. Another answers.

"Make it a green peace."

The Coast Guard stops the boat short of the Aleutians, the test goes ahead on November 6, and nothing survives the expedition but those few words spoken on the deck. The name stays with the boat.

Fifteen years go by, and the color starts to pay.

Fiji, 1986. An American student walks into his hotel room and finds a card on the bed. It asks him to reuse his towel for the sake of the reef.

The hotel is busy extending its bungalows out over that same reef, and every towel left unwashed is money the hotel does not spend on laundry.

The student's name is Jay Westerveld. He gives the practice a name. Greenwashing.

Today green is on the detergent bottle that promises it works in cold water. On the bag sold as compostable. On the tomato carton, on the yogurt cup, on the washing machine that advertises less water per cycle.

An entire civilization has handed one color the job of saving it, and the idea is less than 60 years old.

The Wadj Sign

Three thousand years earlier, on the banks of the Nile, a single sign means green, fresh, young, and thriving. That sign is wadj. It is drawn as a papyrus stalk, and the same root gives the word for a new shoot and the word for a son.

The Egyptian language does not blur color and life in words alone. The tombs blur them too. Embalmers slip a wadj amulet cut from green feldspar around the dead man's neck, so he can begin the journey again. On the walls, Osiris, the god who goes i

nto the tomb and comes back every spring, has green skin.

Much later, a little farther east, the Quran describes the garden waiting for the chosen ones once the world has ended, and it dresses them in green garments of fine silk and brocade.

Europe reaches the same idea through its languages. In English, green, grass, and grow all go back to one old word for growing.

Everywhere, one answer. Green is the color of what lives.

Then, starting in the 14th century, Europe turns on it.

In England, green is the color of the man whose word is worth nothing, and it is the color spread over the tables where money changes hands. In Paris, the debtor who cannot pay walks the streets in a green cap, so that everyone can see who they are dealing with.

For several centuries, the color of life becomes the one to be wary of.

The reason is neither religious nor moral.
