[ FUN FACT #1] 🏔️ Leonardo invented landscape art at 21.

Leonard da Vinci - Landscape of the Arno Valley

In 1473, Leonardo da Vinci did something no Western artist had dared before: he drew pure nature. No saints, no biblical scenes, no humans. Just the Montelupo Castle and the Arno River valley of his childhood.

This single sketch revolutionized art. For the first time, landscape itself became a subject worthy of attention. It was the birth of a genre, tucked away in the Uffizi for 550 years.

[ FUN FACT #2] 🎨 Churchill’s paintbrush saved him from suicide.

Winston Churchill - Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque

In 1915, Winston Churchill, 40 years old, disgraced after Gallipoli, was drowning in what he called his “black dog”: a depression so deep he considered ending it all. Then his sister in law handed him a paintbrush.

That gesture saved his life. Over 48 years, Churchill painted over 500 works. “If it weren’t for painting, I couldn’t live. I couldn’t bear the strain of things.”

[ FUN FACT #3] 💘 Raphael’s boss kidnapped his girlfriend to make him work.

Raphael - Loggia of Cupid and Psyche, Villa Farnesina with Giovan Francesco Penni, Giulio Romano et Giovanni da Udine

In 1517, Raphael couldn’t finish the Villa Farnesina frescoes. Why? He was obsessed with La Fornarina, a baker’s daughter living down the street. He’d skip work to see her. His patron Agostino Chigi even had her kidnapped.

It didn’t work. Raphael got depressed and stopped painting entirely. Chigi gave up and moved the woman INTO the villa. Genius move. Masterpiece completed.

[ FUN FACT #4] 🍽️ Versailles’ royal painter sold art on prison plates for bread.

Hubert Obert - Landscape painted on a plate

In 1793, Hubert Robert had decorated the gardens of Versailles and dined with Marie Antoinette. Then the Revolution came. Thrown into Saint Lazare prison, stripped of everything except his genius.

With no canvas, he painted on ceramic dinner plates and sold them to inmates for food money. The man who once served kings now painted for survival. He created 53 works behind bars.
