Giotto: The Complete Story
Giotto painted Halley's comet into a nativity in 1303, and seven centuries later the European Space Agency named the spacecraft it sent to that comet after him. Western painting's habit of looking at the actual world starts with this one Florentine.
A banker's guilt built him the perfect chapel, Dante certified his fame in verse, and the legends about him are so good they need their own health warning.

The boy on the rock, and other stories
Giotto di Bondone was born around 1267 near Florence, at Vespignano.
Vasari, writing 200 years later, tells how the painter Cimabue found a shepherd boy drawing a sheep on a stone and took him as apprentice; another tale has the apprentice painting a fly so real Cimabue tried to brush it off, and a third has Giotto proving his skill to a papal envoy by drawing a perfect circle freehand.
None can be verified, all are advertising, and the fact that Italy told them for centuries is itself the measure of the man.
Padua, 1303-1305: the Scrovegni Chapel
Enrico Scrovegni built a chapel partly to expiate his father's usury, a sin Dante had already assigned to hell, and hired Giotto to fresco every surface.
The result is the founding room of European painting: the Kiss of Judas eye to eye, the Lamentation with its wailing angels, grief performed by bodies with weight and faces with insides.
Above the manger, as the Star of Bethlehem, Giotto painted the comet he had seen in 1301, the one we call Halley's.

What he actually changed
Byzantine painting gave sacred figures gold air and formula faces; Giotto gave them mass, shadow, architecture to stand in, and emotions readable across a room.
Dante, his contemporary, wrote in the Purgatorio that Cimabue thought he held the field and now the cry was Giotto's.

The myth to handle with care
The shepherd-prodigy legend paints him as a naive natural.
The documents show the opposite: a workshop owner with properties in Florence, contracts across Italy, from Assisi, where the Saint Francis cycle carries a long attribution debate, to Naples and Milan, and enough standing that Florence named him master of works of the cathedral in 1334.
His bell tower, Giotto's Campanile, still carries his name beside Brunelleschi's dome. Boccaccio adds that he was famously ugly and famously witty, which the frescoes' humanity makes easy to believe.

Giotto died in Florence on January 8, 1337. The Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, on timed entry, is the essential pilgrimage; Assisi holds the Francis cycles, the Uffizi the Ognissanti Madonna, Santa Croce in Florence the late chapels, and the campanile stands where he planned it.

Boccaccio and the storytellers add the wit and the famous ugliness; the king of Naples reportedly kept him near for the jokes.
The father of Western painting ran his career like a firm. It changed nothing about the tenderness on the walls, which is its own lesson.
The bell tower
The 1334 appointment made a painter head of the city's biggest construction site, and he answered with a design for the campanile.
He died in 1337 with only the lower stage begun; successors adjusted the engineering and kept his name on the finished tower.
Florence measured its towers in civic pride. Trusting the tallest to a painter measures how completely he had redefined the trade.
Assisi, the argument that never ends
The Life of Saint Francis at Assisi, twenty-eight scenes, is either his early triumph or the work of another master trained in his orbit, depending on who is speaking.
Italian tradition mostly says Giotto; a stubborn scholarly line says otherwise. The documents are silent, and walls cannot be cross-examined.
Either answer leaves the cycle revolutionary. Seven hundred years of looking, still unresolved, is a monument in itself.
