How Did Monet Die?
Claude Monet died on 5 December 1926 at his home in Giverny, aged eighty six, of lung cancer. He kept painting his water garden almost to the very end, even as his eyesight failed him.
No scandal and no tragedy. The father of Impressionism simply grew old among his flowers.

A long life and a quiet end
Monet outlived almost everyone in his circle. By the 1920s he was the grand old man of French painting, rich, celebrated and rooted in the village of Giverny, where he had built a house and an enormous garden.
Lung cancer took him at the end of 1926. He was buried in the local churchyard, with only family and a few close friends present, exactly as he wanted.
Painting through failing eyes
From around 1912 cataracts clouded his sight. Colors turned muddy and yellow to him, and for a while he painted more from memory and habit than from what he could clearly see.
He finally had surgery on one eye in 1923. It changed how he saw color again, and through all of it he kept working on the vast water lily paintings that filled his final years.
The garden he never left
Monet meant his last great water lily panels as a gift to France, a room of calm after the First World War. They were installed in the Orangerie in Paris in 1927, a few months after he died, so he never saw them hung.
