What Is Monochrome Painting?
Monochrome painting is art made in a single color, or in the many shades, tints and tones of one color. With no other hues to distract the eye, everything else steps forward: light, texture, gesture and mood.
One color, end to end. It sounds like less, and it often hits harder.
The idea runs from quiet grey old master studies all the way to a glowing blue canvas that started a scandal.

One color, many shades
Monochrome does not mean flat or empty. A painter works the single color across its full range, from near black to the palest tint, so the surface still has depth and movement.
A grey toned version has its own name, grisaille, long used for underpaintings and for imitating carved stone. Working in shades of one hue was a test of control, not a shortcut.
Why a painter throws out the palette
Strip away color and you force attention onto everything else. The eye stops reading a scene and starts feeling the surface: the thickness of the paint, the direction of the brush, the way light slides across it.
It is reduction as a kind of power. Less to look at, more to feel.
The radical modern monochrome
In the twentieth century the single color stopped being a technique and became the whole work. In 1915 Kazimir Malevich showed a black square on white and called it the zero point of painting, a key moment for abstract art.
Yves Klein went further with a blue so deep he patented his recipe in 1960, International Klein Blue, and filled canvas after canvas with it.
Ad Reinhardt spent his last years on black paintings that reveal their faint shapes only after long, patient looking.
