The Sistine Chapel is in Vatican City, the small independent state set inside Rome on the west bank of the Tiber. It stands on the first floor of the Apostolic Palace, the pope's official residence, and visitors reach it through the Vatican Museums, whose entrance is on Viale Vaticano.
It is not part of St. Peter's Basilica, the great church a short walk away, and it is not a gallery of the museums. It is the pope's own chapel, and it is still the room where the cardinals meet to elect each new pope.

The Sistine Chapel has no front door. Britannica describes its exterior as unadorned, a simple brick building with six arched windows. There is no façade, and the way in leads through other rooms of the palace. Nothing on the outside tells a passerby that the most famous painted ceiling in the world lies under that roof.
The only outdoor sign of what the room is for is a temporary one. When the cardinals gather to choose a pope, workers fix a metal chimney to the roof, and the smoke that rises from it tells the crowd waiting outside whether the vote has produced one. The chimney last went up in May 2025.
A building that hides its entrance and speaks to the world only through smoke was not made for sightseers. I read that as the clearest sign of what the room is: it was made for the pope, and everyone else comes in by a side route, through a museum.
