Where Is the Sistine Chapel?
The Sistine Chapel is inside Vatican City, the small independent state in the heart of Rome. It sits within the Apostolic Palace, the pope's official residence, and you reach it through the Vatican Museums.
It is not a museum room and it is not part of St Peter's Basilica. It is the pope's own chapel, kept inside his palace.
The essentials
Country: Vatican City, an independent state inside Rome, Italy.
Building: the Apostolic Palace.
Entrance: through the Vatican Museums, not St Peter's.
On the route: the last great room of the standard museum visit.
Function: the pope's chapel and the site of the conclave.
A country inside a city
Vatican City is the smallest country on Earth, about 44 hectares, completely surrounded by the city of Rome.
The chapel stands within its walls, a short walk from St Peter's Basilica and the pope's apartments.
How you actually get to it
Visitors enter from the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano, on the north side of the state.
From there it is a long walk through galleries, including the map corridor and the Raphael Rooms, before you reach the chapel at the end. You cannot stroll into it directly from St Peter’s Basilica, which surprises almost everyone I tell.
Why it is a chapel, not a gallery
Pope Sixtus IV built it in the 1470s as the pope's private chapel, and it has stayed a religious space ever since.
That is why the rules feel stricter than a museum: silence is requested, and photography is banned. To see who covered its walls and ceiling, read who painted the Sistine Chapel.
What sits right next door
In the same tiny state you have St Peter's Basilica, St Peter's Square, the Raphael Rooms and the Vatican picture gallery.
Most people see the chapel as the climax of a half day spent crossing the whole complex.
When to go if you want to breathe
The chapel is one of the most crowded rooms in the world. Midday in high season is shoulder to shoulder.
Early entry slots and the last hours of the day are calmer. For the artist behind it all, read Michelangelo: The Complete Story.

A private room the whole world visits
The chapel sits a few hundred steps from the pope's apartments.
When the cardinals gather to choose a new pope, they walk to it in procession from inside the same palace. The most visited painting in the world is, in plain terms, a private room in someone’s house, and to me that never stops being strange.
