Born in the Blue House

Frida was born in 1907 in the family home in Coyoacan, then a quiet town on the edge of Mexico City.

The house, painted a deep cobalt blue, is known as the Casa Azul. She spent most of her life inside it and died there too. It is now her museum, told room by room.

The years she spent abroad

Frida did leave Mexico, mostly because of Diego's work. In the early 1930s the couple lived in Detroit and New York while he painted murals.

She was miserable there. She found the United States cold and money obsessed, nicknamed it Gringolandia, and longed for home the entire time. Their marriage made her travel, as you can read in who Frida Kahlo married.

Why Mexico was everything

Frida did not just come from Mexico. She wore it.

She dressed in long Tehuana skirts and indigenous jewelry from the south of the country, both a celebration of Mexican identity and a political statement against European fashion. Her roots were her costume, her subject and her flag.
