Michelangelo's David is so famous because it combines superhuman technical skill, a daringly fresh idea, and a powerful political meaning, all carved from a block of marble that others had given up on. The block nobody could use
The marble had sat in Florence for decades, started and abandoned by two earlier sculptors and known simply as the Giant. It was tall, narrow and partly botched.
In 1501 Michelangelo, then twenty six, took on the impossible block and spent about three years drawing a perfect figure out of its flaws. That rescue alone became part of the legend.
A new way to show an old hero
Earlier artists showed David after the battle, sword raised, the giant's head at his feet. Michelangelo chose the moment before: David tense, watching, deciding, sling over his shoulder.
The pose is a triumph of contrapposto, calm on one side and coiled on the other, and the heroic nude form recalls ancient Greece while feeling completely alive.
A symbol the whole city claimed
Florence read the statue at once as a portrait of itself: a small republic, clever and brave, ready to stand against larger tyrants. It was placed outside the seat of government in the main square, a public emblem of the city's defiance.
